ive seen a few posts where people use a fish tank heater to heat water in there tanks.
i have a 500l tank, what output tank heater do you need to produce the best results ? i know a lot of you will say get a gas heater, but i dont want to go down that route,if the water in my tank is warm i will be happy, especially if it makes the hoses flexible, any posotive help will be appreciated.
many thanks

I'm looking at ordering one of these, how much would a 500w cost per night ish?
And how do you position them so as not to be in contact with the plastic wall of the tank?

Guys, I think you'll find that your aquarium heaters will come with plastic surrounds or suction pads that will keep the heaters from coming into contact with your tanks. But, as you can appreciate, the fact that these heaters have something plastic already attached to them, they don't really get that hot to the touch.

thanks nick ;)
seems you have started something off here, the amount of people showing interest in your idea is great, you should have taken shares in the company 8)
would i need hose for hot water using this?

The heater I use has suction cups on so it just sticks to the bottom of the tank.
Our electric is around 16p per kw so 8p per hr so 10 hrs 80p ish.
You wont need hot hose as it doesnt reach that sort of temp, just warm enough to soften pipes a little
and stop the water freezing, makes reeling in a dream.

One heater will never get that tank to max temp, so you've nothing to worry about. :)

Hi Tony!
Further to Takinatrip's comments on water temperature, you'll notice that on very cold days, when the outside temperature is around freezing or below, the water behaves somewhat differently on the glass if it has been heated. It will flow much quicker, making the rinsing more effective, because warm or hot water is far less viscous than cold. To use an exaggerated analogy, you might say that, if cold waters ability to rinse equates to rinsing with treacle, then hot water can be likened to rinsing with vodka. Ok, I've use hyperbole, but you can appreciate the disparity.
This is why I favour heating the water in the tank; you have all the benefits of using a gas boiler, but you also gain the advantage of a king size radiator in the back of your van, to boot.

After some consideration, I am going to do the same. Can't think of any negatives at all. Great idea.
