Interesting, how will they administer the scheme, Someone DVLA or another body will still need to keep records of who has paid the Excise fee. This may make watching the Autumn statement worth while. Or will it be another wheeze designed to save money that costs twice as much as the old system?

As Ian posted above, it's all about hiking up the yearly cost by stealth as it'll be a small monthly increase.

Hi Ian

It will be a list of who hasn't paid the fee checked against SORN files. Whats left over will be sent automatic fines in the post. The question I have to ask is which demeanor do you get done for, no tax disc or vehicle not SORN.

The costs of issuing tax discs must be quite considerable.

Traffic Master was one of the first commercial systems that applied number plate recongition software in it's roadside cameras to monitor traffic flow and speed. It read number plates at point A and looked for those number plates at point B. Once those cars past point B the distance and time were now available to work out average traffic speed. The police tried to piggyback this system to issue speeding fines. Traffic Master refused and the dept of Road Transport took them to court. Thankfully, the courts ruled in favour of Traffic Master.

Now a large portion of police cars have this technology, so if you get pulled over, they already know all your details before they invite you to sit in the back of their police car and talk things through.

It's been pointed out since the beginning of time that the ved system could be dissolved and a 3p per litre fuel duty increase would more than pay for it and simplify our lives at the same time - only downside, you'd the have thousands of unemployed civil servants and DVLA workers to pay off but at least this way the bureaucratic machine continues...

Agreed technology allows us to move away from an old VED system and simplify it. Thanks Spruce for your input. Will it could allow VED to be extended to other road users and be reinvested in safer roads for all.

It's not fair you have to pay 12 months upfront just to save for paying 6 months.

12 months for me was £220
6 months is about £120

It should be 12equal installments

Our lasses car is £170 , and if we ever get enough cash to buy another car it will be a cheap £30 or zero tax car .
