Title: Has anyone ever brought in a partner?
Post by: hank jr on November 27, 2013, 07:50:57 am
Hi all, i'm just wondering what your opinions are on this question?

My brother in law is a real grafter, he works hard at everything he does. He doesn't mind doing 14 hour days as long as hes making decent money.

Hes asked me to come in on the business and work to expand the round by canvassing daily.

Has anybody else ever done this and did it work out?

I have to admit it seems really tempting to not have to do all the work and all the collecting and all the marketing and investing all my money on new equipment/ tools etc....

Most defo end in tears,

As a partner is he going to inject some cash ie..  50 percent of the biz value?

I would only take on family as an employee with strong and specific pay, hours, holiday structure

A partnership will work fine if both partys pull there finger out and stay hungry to succeed.
If it did all go tits up simply split everything 50/50 that you have built up!
Eg a 10k and 2 van business would be a van and full round each.

Sounds like you should just go and work for him mate.if u can't be bothered yourself.

Loads of people would rather just get a wage at the end of the week without the hassle of being self employed.

Best wishes

I get what you are all saying, but, we are not  here to advice his bro in law, it is him that is taking the risk, from the OP point of view it is a good way in, just don't let him down and put in the graft

only ever did it once I lost 10k (it was a shop)

only do it if he gives up half the cash upfront then hes got something to lose as well , if not just employ him

Re read the OP stu, not the most straightforward of written question, but I took it BIL wants to join OP.

OP- is he giving the van to the biz?

This statement worries me -  hard grafter as long as he makes good money...

You take on a partner and your income is immediately halved ? Can you both live on that income ?   It may take several months for you to build up enough new biz to just get back where you are now.  All these things need to be realised and discussed between you

Sorry , yes its Me who has the biz, bro in law wants to come in.  Bro in law comes with own van. He also states that all my work i have now will always be mine, and he is willing to start from scratch to build up another round which will both of ours.

Im not really sure were to go with this, but hes out of work....and i already employ someone else...

Why does he need to partner up. Why not just setup on his own and you help and advise when he needs it. Maybe sell (give) him some work to get him started.

No-one's mentioned the real point:  What do you get out of it?  So you create a partnership, it's still just two men cleaning windows, how does that differ from two independant  w/c's working and pocketing the money they each generate?

The only reaon you should consider a deal like this is if you stand to profit by it.

You could employ him, or you could do it my way ;)

2 minds don`t think as one.Keep your business and help him get on his feet by opening up your know how to him.He can build his round and you just advise him and let him get out and fend for him self.  Maybe just use one trading name in an association to give strength to his side of the business.

Letting him use your trading name is a terrible idea. You could lose a lot if he is unreliable, bad at his job or wants to sell up further down the line.

Don't go into partnership with friends or family ever. Wouldn't employ friends or family either, preferred to employ total strangers in the past as it's all above board for healthy work ethics (you're the employer and they're the employee and you know where you stand) :)

all that if it ends in tears we can go 50/50 garbage wont work.. because you will be arguing left right and centre and hate each other... you wont be giving anyone 50/50 and he has a van that you dont own... he wil be off with it in no time with your system in the back.. what u going to do then?
