This could just be, a genuine mistake by either party. You unfortunately will have to write it off. You could always go down the paper trail route ie Bacs , stading order ect. However it is always nice to have cash flow ! Ed

I wouldn't be letting staff deal with cash, wrong for a number of reasons but that doesn't really answer your question.

I used to deal with a lot of cash for my gaffer.
Side with your lad. But remember it. Let the customer off.
2 or 3 times-bin him.

whatever you do, dont let your staff have access to seeing a list of customers.   because if they leave they can use the list  to poach your customers or  use it to get a toehold some other way

tother year i had a proper rogue work for me and after he left he poached several of my customers, thank christ he never saw the list of customers cos i believe he would have devastated me big time

keep a gap in their knowledge  is my tip

If you can't let your staff see you work sheets and not collect money while working they should not be working for you. It's all about trust at the end of  the day. And that's why your ferrying a load of wasters about cleaning when realistically they should be out cleaning and collecting while you are in a other van with some one cleaning and max the days earning

Just put a restraint of trade clause in their contracts

We've been doing that now for over a year. Got the idea off someone on here. Saves all the arguments. We all have these problems with custies claiming to have paid etc. This solution is what we found best. Thanks to whoever it was, or was it you Paul13?  ;D

I have been doing this for years, I started it back in the good old days when
we where trad and our employee turn over was pretty high ;D
If anybody interested I can email work sheets we use, simple stuff but works well
if your sending guys out on there own.

Try not to employ people you don't trust. Not easy.

Get as many as you can paying via internet banking / card payments / direct debit. Again, not easy.

Go and collect the money yourself?

Signed paperwork will only stop an 'honest' thief. If someone wants to fleece you they probably can, especially if they are handling cash. Signed paper work will mean that thievery will eventually be caught out but probably not straight away.

There's a fella in Stamford who has a few boys on his team.
His Mrs collects the whole weeks takings on a Saturday morning.
Regular as clock-work.

I know it's a bit sexist but I wouldn't be happy with my wife carrying 4 figures+ in cash on her but at least he knows his lads ain't skimming.

As has been said-the only real way to sure is using someone you truly trust. But even then you may still get bitten.
I trusted someone almost implicitly but he stabbed me in the back.
Don't know until you know.

On the flip side, when I started I worked for a guy for about 18 months.
I was doing about £6k a month for him and collecting about half(ish)
Half of that again in cash.
Obviously extra's came up every month.
I can honestly say I never creamed off the top.
Conservatory roofs. Extra insides. FSG's. I told him about every single one.
The deal was that I got half of what was earned.
I was happy at that.

Persevere OP. That guy is out there.

that's the one where the employees will take is the connie roofs, gutter cleaning e.t.c but like you say if its 50/50 then they wont have to. whoever said about restraint of trade is having a laugh most wont be going through books when they first set up anyway and if you have even half intelligent lads working for you not showing them the list/book wont help at all cause they will still know the houses and will just go and knock on each door giving a rock bottom price.
