Title: looks like scratched glass
Post by: pikeman on November 25, 2013, 03:19:16 pm
Went to a regular  today and asked me to look at her patio glass. along the top are like brush marks slight scratches. Cant see them from the outside but can from the inside. Cant feel any scratch marks on the outside. To me it looks like they inbetween the two panes. But only appeared recently. Could it be a break down of the seals.

Do you use WFP on them?

It could be grit on the brush head, although it's unlikely we can end up scratching glass.

Cerium oxide would do the trick if it's light scratches on the outside.

Type it into you tube if your not sure what cerium oxide is.

Yes jonny wfp its not just  couple of scratches which you would get with grit but like brush marks all the way across top to half way down the glass. All the other windows are fine

Try rubbing it off - could just be spiders webs streaked across the glass by your brush.

Many thanks for the replys. Just cant see how my brush has caused it. Theres no sign of marks looking from the outside. Really does look like its inside the sealed unit. Got a friend whose a window fitter taking a look tomorrow. He seems to think its the seal breaking down. Worse case scenario how much to replace units in a patio ???

If there's not indentation on the front then, in all likelihood, it can't be you.

I wouldn't offer to replace the glass unit if i were you. If it's toughened I'd say you'd be looking at £80, if it's laminated glass, maybe £140. Then fitting on top.

I've never seen a window deteriorate that way with lines? Usually it's misting up etc.

If you can't feel a scratch at all from the outsides then it doesn't seem to be a scratch.

not all of the time some scratched ive removed have been real bad looking ones that you can feel and have come straight out with wet and dry and then buffing them , be carefull as you can bow the glass  and theres little ones that just never move and you cant feel them but see them

let your friend do his job if its your fault and you have to do something yet cant take a polisher to the glass yourself you could find a car detailer (a real detailer not a car washer) and see if he will go round and sort it

or buy the kit and have a go yourself you have northing to lose as it need replaceing anyway go steady and do a little at a time like we did

No cant feel any indentations neither can the customer which she said. Shes not being arsey  but does want to find out what has caused it. as do I. If it is me then I will replace or try to polish out as suggested by susan. Apparently when making the units they polish the glass with some type of brush so if the seal breaks down the brush marks come can noticeable. Noticed next doors patio in the same type house so same time period has broken down, but shows the normal misting up and mold.

Leave well alone.

There's no way you can scratch glass with a proper window cleaning brush, if it was grit you would have ruined every house that day.

if all goes wrong doing your good will thing its on your toes and your back to square one be nice and even if she starts ranting just leave and carry with life  but Be NICE

The more  i think about it the more im sure it cant be the brush, garniers cill, theres just too many of them. Fine lines running down from the top all the way along to half way down. every other window is fine as is next doors. Still a bit of a worry though. Good advice about being nice, I am anyway :D

Ask her if it's self cleaning glass, or ever been coated with that water repellant spray.
The coating eventually wears away which could leave brush marks as it's removed, perhaps.

Totally agree.
