Title: Can we keep it cleaning??
Post by: Tim Downer on March 13, 2006, 10:10:46 pm
Hi all  :(

I have been off the computer for 4 days......and look at the mess it is in!!

I'm not going to say anything about the childish postings and bickering that some of our esteamed members have written.....and i'm glad the moderators have put a stop to those posts.

I will be honest with you all, I come onto this site to read the threads, learn from them or make suggestions......rightly or wrong.....because i am in the cleaning industry AND WANT TO LEARN AND PROGRESS.

However, i do not come on this forum to read the slagging matches that do go on from time to time and personally would appreciate it if you guys kept that to the non-cleaning part of the cleanitup site.....and kept this part of the forum to just CLEANING ISSUES. (I know, even i have diversed from cleaning issues in the past......before i get some comments about that)

Either that or would appreciate it if the Moderators would keep a tighter control on the content of this forum and keep the content to what it is intended for.

I wish i knew how to block this posting so that the childish bickering would not start again!! But what can you do?

Kind Regards

From a disappointed Tim x x

P.S - Karl, if you do ever read this.....then all the best anyway and maybe we will cross paths oneday.....going for the same contract!!  ;D

Have you noticed how many newbies have stopped posting, because I think this has scared them off.
I have been getting a steady stream of emails from some of them, as they dont want to post their questions for the fear of looking stupid.

If everyone just agreed with everyone it would be very dull.
And lose a lot of the entertainment value.

Thanks for your comments chaps

Do you blame people for not posting....if i was a newbie on the forum, i would be too scared to comment - or even not bother coming back.

I hope they read your comments there Preston Powerblast and do come back.

And no.....i agree with D Woods that life indeed would be dull if we were all like robots.....however, people come to this site to get answers to their questions.....or find them on the search section......and i am not here for the entertainment value  :(  especially when it escalates to people moving away.

I dont want to say any more......because it will end up being like the other posts  :-X

Regards

Tim

But a lot of people dont just come on here for entertainment, some are genuinely interested in starting up in business and want help and guidance from seasoned pro's.
I for one am happy to help, I dont know all there is to know.
But on the other hand i am very good at my job and with a lot of help from people on here have become very knowledgable.

Arthur, you ARE the entertainment  ;)

Have to agree with Dave. Must of us own our own businesses and a lot of us have pretty big ego's, we spend our days making decisions and telling people what to do. And I bet not one business on here is run the same as any other,  there is bound to be friction every now and then, but that's healthy.
I am sorry to see CMS leave, but I was very surprised at how little it took for him to walk, perhaps there was another motive, we don't know. The name calling was very petty, I've taken much worse but had forgotten about it 10 minutes later.

It would be a very boring site that no-one visited if we all agreed with each other.

I even disagree with Tim wanting tighter moderator control, its a fair site with different opinions, this is Britain, not Korea. All newbies are scared to start with, I was, I still look stupid with every post I write, but its all good fun. If newbies are scared of cyberspace how on earth are they going to cope going for quotes etc.

Love the irony of this thread by the way.

An interesting start to the thread however we all got lost, but that is part of the beauty of all this, its just word association at a different level. For the record I am a newbie and as I am sure you are aware by now I am not scared to post. Although I do understand to a degree about the bickering it is indeed just that that a lot can be learnt from each other. Sometimes it gets personal and as wrong as it is I will defend to the hilt if I have made a statement and it is attacked. An opinion is always open for discussion and should be discussed but your point is correct and we should be carful in how we do it..... I have noticed (off the subject) that the better idea that someone has or the better they are doing the more they appear to be "had" at. ..... I was hoping to meet a few of the forum members at carpex to discuss many of the topics from on here and to just meet fellow cleaners, however I have had a death in the family and so will not be able to attend. But I already have the best truck mount and portable anyway so why do I need to attend..... Go on you have to laugh, best, Dave.

I have noticed (off the subject) that the better idea that someone has or the better they are doing the more they appear to be "had" at.

i think youve hit the nail on the head there,  i believe there are some that do not like the idea of someone in the same line being more succsesfull, we should be "bigging up" encouraging and helping(isnt that whats all about) both newbies and the more established companies, anyway lets drop it now and get back to the purpose of the forum ;)

Not wishing to disagree with anyone . .. .  but I completely disagree with the statement that others that appear to be more successful are more of a target than others.

My experience on this board, as a relatively new member, is completely the opposite of what you suggest.

If you are a newbie, there was a culture to slag off spelling, ideas, etc, etc. .  by the "gods" of the board.  Now, I'm a stickler for presentation, but don't openly mock those who are asking a genuine question, which is what was happening over and again, on all manner of topics (not just cleaning).

Remember the website arguement?

Although I do not moderate this section, could I suggest that if a post appears to be getting out of hand use the report to moderator section.

In General I have noticed some people our Constructive, some are comedians but give little info and some are unhelpful

Fair comment Ian but of all posts this hasnt got out of hand, even though we are talking of when they have. Points have been made in the way they should. And a classic example is my opinion clashed with another opinion and it hasnt caused any bickering, just opinions were made in the way they should be....maybe a first and long may they continue, cheers, best, Dave.

Dave,

I do not think I was saying this had got out of hand.

I was just saying if any did.

What I also meant to say is do not be afraid of posting.

I was a little disturbed on another Forum , when I saw a respected Carpet Cleaner critising other cleaners for asking simple questions.

Unfortunately slanging matches and general insults seem to bring most forums into disripute.  I go on alot of camping/caravanning websites and thease sometimes turn into something nasty.
I say rise above it and try and keep the friendly people chatting on here.
This forum has been such a help to me personally and i have learnt alot so i for one will keep popping in. ;D

I dont think we are making matters any better by advertising the fact to newcomers to the forum that we bicker with each other(i know we dont on the whole ;D) but any newbie reading this thread might be put off a bit! what do you think? close the thread?.........

Question:

How come the people who were apparently the most outraged with a thread caused by a difference of an opinion and want it to stop, are the first people to air their opinion (once it has stopped) thereby carrying it on?

To have their say I guess, but wasn’t that what caused the problem in the first place.

Isn’t human nature surprising, perhaps it doesn’t have any higher level after all!
Title: Re: Can we keep it cleaning??
Post by: therapist on March 16, 2006, 05:14:37 pm
Who suggested Human Nature had a  ''higher level'' the reality is, human nature is  at the ''base'' and it's only through self control that we bahave in a so called civilised way.

That's why we argue and ''defend our corner'' so vigorously and why some people have serious behavioural problems.

It's mostly instinctive and although much of it's unnacceptable, an understanding of what's going on can often allow us to diffuse rather than inflame situations.

In other words...........differences of opinion are healthy and normal..........obviously there are occasions when all of us, overstep the mark, usually when our judgement, beliefs, or capabilities are being challenged.

The Japanese culture dictates that there should always leave an adversery an escape route to avoid them  ''losing face''
In other words........even when you believe yourself to bo absolutely correct, show compassion and ram your opinions down other peoples throats.

Me...guilty ? of course I am ocasionally, but hopefully not too often

happy days

Cor aren’t we being civil. I guess this is a proper disagreement which is more acceptable to those who dislike the other type.

Ok then
Given enough cause, anyone will argue to the enth degree as anyone here would. Now an argument or disagreement is exactly that a difference of an opinion where neither will concede, it will end when its done.

However what’s far more interesting (or vulgar depending on your view) is those who actively carry it on when all is finished and the reason why they do.

Is it entertainment? Could it be lack of participation? Or is it simply a case of uncontrollable self importance. The one thing it isn’t and never will be is "respect" you might need the aid of drugs for that one.  ;)

The irony of course is that people who participate at this level convince themselves that they are doing the right thing which of course they never are.

Therapist:
Japanese culture never dictated anything. Nor would any culture that tries to overwrite human instinct. Nobody allows a backdoor unless the results prove acceptable to them or they are beaten.

Lets not forget Tim this was his post after all.
BOOO down with arguments and lets all be nice and just agree with each other (god I hope not).
lol.
