T260 with 2 x 400 litre tanks?
The payload on the T260 is 988kgs, so with you, diesel, 2 full tanks and all your other stuff, ladders and roof rack, that van is overloaded everytime.

I have a t260 and there's no way it could take 800ltrs of water, as spruce says, after equipment etc you must be way over payload

T300 = 1388 kgs
T330 = 1477 kgs (but in those days this van didn't use the 2.0 tdci motor - it was the 2.4 litre lump.)

The early 280's don't have the 280 payload either. We purchased a 2003 transit and found out the payload is around 1000kg. Its badged as a 280 and is a 280 on the logbook, but has a 260 payload!
By then it was too late and a 800 crash tank had been fitted. We dont ever fill her up :(

Spruce, so my 03 t300 has a payload of 1388 kgs? I've read of so many varying figures.

Hi Nick. I should have added that those figures were with the 2.0tdci engine. Ford also had the 2.4 in some of those older vans as well and payload was dependant on whether is was FWD or RWD. The 2.0 Tddi motor was also in the mix as well. It was very complicated. Little wonder you have so many differing figures. (In the commercial sales sector we used the above figures. The standard roof Transit as per the advert had a load volume of 6.6 cm whereas the Ducato/Boxer/Relay was 7.5cm.)
In fact the 2008 T260 that is advertised on Ebay has the slightly heavier 2.2 tdci motor so it could be that the payload is less if they tried to keep to the 2600 gross vehicle weight.
I had a quick look on the Ford website but I see that they have revised the details of the current range. It seems as though the new Ford Custom van is now marketed as the low roof profile model, but the most recent Transit (now Trend) is the Medium/high roof variant. The payload of the T260 medium roof van is much lower than the 988kgs of the old low roof - only customers would be light users such as Walker's Crisps ;D

The 2.0 Tdci was the lightest engine.
There isn't much difference between 1388 and 1400kgs. I know there is a difference in payload (very small) with the up opening rear door and the double barn doors. (RAC's spec on the T330 was the up opening door as it allowed a bit of protection against the weather if the RAC mechanic needed a 'dry' place to work. The barn doors are the most popular as the van can be loaded with a forklift.)

I've been a Ford fan for 25+ years and had two Escort Vans and a P100 pick up and always liked and have driven many Transit vans. However my tame mechanic, who is also a Transit fan and currently has two, has this very week been working on a customers Transit - It's a 2010 and requires extensive welding at about two days worth ! Is this the last vehicle that Ford make that still succumbs to tin worm ?

However my tame mechanic, who is also a Transit fan and currently has two, has this very week been working on a customers Transit - It's a 2010 and requires extensive welding at about two days worth ! Is this the last vehicle that Ford make that still succumbs to tin worm ?
Learnt my lesson from a lrevious transit.
Had this one up on a ramp and sprayed the floor/sills/chassis/wheel arches with some waxy oil/ water proof paint stuff that my mechanic mate recommended.
Should prevent rusting underneath so should not need any of the welding transits are prone to needing in the future (in theory anyway)
