3 weeks ago some clown drove up the backside of my van.
He gave me his details (phone num, address etc) hes from my town.
He said could I please not go thru insurance and he will pay out of his own money for damage.
Its taken panel beater 3 weeks to get me a quote printed out.
As its gone on quite a while, if the lad that drove into me try's to pull a fast one and say he didnt do it, what should I do as dont think violence is answer although I will if needs be.
Ive got a photo on my phone of his van and mine but the number plate isnt visable.
Any advice on this lads as im paying him a visit tomorrow to show him the quote.
Cheers
-
How much we talking? Value of van?
-
Not much use now, but insurance is there for a reason. Its in the name. Just hope hes not pulling a fast one for you. Hope you get it sorted mate.
If not, don't ;) beat him up too much!
-
how much is it?
-
Speak to one of my daughters, both legal exec's is this field!
-
Im picking the quote up in the morning but he estimated about £1000
New rear door, removal of glass from old door (sign writing), respray bumper.
The value of my van surely doesnt make any diffrence?

if it took someone 3 weeks to give me a price for that damage then there is no way in a million years id use them to repair that little bump. in fact id just ask him for £500 and not repair it as its only a little bump

Well unlike you pal, I would like my van pristine as it was before he shunted me...
-
The value will be taken into account when the assess the claim. Not sure on % but if they think not economically viable, they will write it off, better to hand it to insurance !

This happened to me but his car backfired, the doors fell off and he threw some confetti in my face.
Sorry, James, I couldn't resist ;D.

Therefore best not to go via insurance company.
-
The reason I asked the value of the van is that if the damage is more than the value of the repair (or close to it) then an insurer may "write it off" and offer a value to you and let you keep the van.
My guess is that what will happen is this.
You: "Here's the quote"
Him: "What!? A grand! For a little knock like that? He's having a laugh mate."
You: "Well that's what he says."
Him: "I know a bloke who'll do a decent job for £300"
And then it goes on.
What would I do with a 51 plate van with a small knock like that?
Get more than one quote. Go round and say; look the best quote I've got is £XXX. Will you pay him direct?
He will probably um and err and suck his teeth and offer to get a bloke he knows to have a look. You may have to let that go through the process but if you don't like the look of his bloke's set up I'd go back one last time.
Then I'd say "you were insured weren't you?" he'll say "yes mate but I don't want to use them" and you say "no sorry - I want a proper job - if you don't agree a deal I will put the matter in the hands of my insurers" and walk away.
Then I'd pass all the details you have of him to them and let them give you guidance as to how to deal with it.
Worst case scenario? It doesn't get done, he's not insured and you might get an offer off your own insurer. Weigh it up against any loss of no claims and decide.
Best case? Professional job off his insurance.
My guess - he will be shocked at the cost and make an offer. If I was running a 51 plate van and got offered say £400/£500 I'd take it and live with the knock.
-
I agree with James, why would you want to leave it as it would start looking a right eyesore not good when your going to price jobs in a battered up van 😜

£500 cash and one of these http://www.gardinerpolesystems.co.uk/acatalog/large-van-sticker-100cm-x-25cm-gardiner-pole-system.html ;D

Just say to him
'You pay to get it fixed or I report this to the insurance company today'
You soon get a response and your giving him a timeline of today to get it fixed.
I am like you, My vans must be in prestige and they is not allowed to be any Mud on it!
-
You should have gone through the insurance, same thing happened to me, van was classed a category c write off so i kept the van which was still road worthy and got paid out nearly 2 grand.

Happened to my mate car! He got Cat C and paid £200 from scrap yard and got it fixed and tested by VOSA again and got it fixed.

If he's trying to get a grand off you for that mate i think he's up to one of them crash for cash scams. There is no way there is a grands worth of damage their, he's having you over. You havn't even touched his bumper. I'd alert the police and insurance straight away to a possible fraudulent claim.
-
I had a idiot turn into me a few weeks ago and he admitted it was his fault and didnt want to go through insurance. I got my mechanic to quote me and got the parts quoted and added a £50 for my time and he paid up. £220 got me a new bonnet, light unit and bumper. (it was a ford escort so parts are cheap.) ((so was my mechanic))
-
Its the inner bumper support bar and brackets that get damaged and there may even be a ripple in the chassis as the rear is part of the crumple zone, so the picture doesn't show the full extent of the damage underneath.
My gut feeling is that you car will be written off by the isurance company. A 51 plate is only worth about £500 in their books, probably less
Forget the other guy, report it to your insurance and the police. My guess is that he has issues, no insurance or perhaps was driving without a valid drivers licence.
-
3 weeks to get a written quote is crazey, he must be lazey AND greedy to boot.
you will be able to get a matching door from a breakers yard for under a £100 , that door was made from 1996-2008 unchanged , another £100 at the absolute tops to have it painted and fitted
-
Well, i'll be taking the quote to him this afternoon, and if he doesnt pay it then i'll get insurance company involved.
-
Don't you need to report all accidents within 72 hours or something ? This happened to me 2 times once 7 years ago the guy was begging me not to after like 12 hours the next morning he wasn't answering his phone and called me saying he will replace the car it was cheap around £800 asked me for a few weeks I said no mate has to be today or I must report if he said ok I promise ill call you soon be didn't and I reported it and got paid out
And last year the repair cost was £250 I offered to the girl as she just pasted her test and would have had a nightmare if I reported it with her Premium so gave her the option if she came up with the repair cost within a few hours her dad and her met me and that was that
I'm not sure if they the insurance will entertain your case?
-
This is a prime example of why I ALWAYS go through the insurance.
You are doing all the running around getting quotes etc. for bugger all. ???
Also what are your plans for transport while your van is in for repair?
If you went through the insurance you should be supplied with a courtesy vehicle and would be able to continue working and earning.
-
IMO its crazy not to go through the insurance company when there's no dispute whose fault it was. The only person with anything to gain from that is him, you can only lose.
For one thing you now have the hassle of getting payment from him, which the insurance co would have just handled. You won't get a courtesy vehicle while yours is being repaired. He may try to haggle and argue about the price etc etc.
Because its not your fault, and there's no argument about that, the insurance co would have delt with it without any downside to you. If its still possible, I'd go through the insurance co.
-
Don't forget to get your doctors note signing you off work for a sore neck, the cheque should come through in time to book next years summer holiday
-
Basically I would have given him 3 hours to come up with the money otherwise everyone is right how add up all your time u have spent faving about
-
I would contact your insurer and advise them the vehicle has been involved in an accident. However make it clear at this point you are not claiming as the 3rd party has accepted fault for the accident. He has offered to pay which may mean he is not insured or does not have a valid licence.
Give him a reasonable time frame to get the repairs carried out at his expense, and if he tries to deny it your insurers already have details.
-
its a write off if you go thought the insurance they wont even send some one out to look at it, bottom book on that is 900 pounds
your going to have a hell of a fight if hes got people to say he was with them and didn't hit you !!!!! at the time of the accident
this is why we drummed in to our staff that if any of them had a bump weather there fault or not ,pull there phones out and take as many pics as possible , of our van , there car or van , and of the driver saves all this problem
sorry to hear that this is happening but your now at the point of
if you go ahead a claim and you lose that could cost you 40% no claims next year which could out cost the damage to your van I would just take it on the chin with an old van like that , and put it down to being foolish and trusting people
-
Lol.
I thought it was his motor with the ding in it.
51 plate Berlingo is about £300 on Autotrader.

Its a Berlingo Multispace so would be worth a few pennies more than a Berlingo van of the same age.

Personally I'd avoid using your insurance at all costs and I'll tell you why .......................................
I got hit twice - both times the fault of another driver - contacted my insurance company and got the van fixed both times - great!
Year later my wife phones up on behalf of my son to reinsure his BMW - I'm a named driver to keep his premium down
"ok madam, any claims or accidents in the last year?"
"No, well apart from my husbands van that got hit - not his fault, claimed off other persons insurance"
"ok then that's going to be £250 for not informing us of the accidents and ......... £750 to add to your sons insurance"
"WTF! - WHY!!!!!!!"
"Well because your husband is now high risk"
Insurance companies are as bent as our bankers, politicians and energy suppliers.

Depends how the insurance is set up on Van. Mines is Set up as I am a Employee and which I am allowed to drive which does not effect my personal insurance.

Now you've told them you might as well go through them.
You are both gonna get screwed like the weedy guy in prison.
-
Yep, they will be rubbing their greedy little hands together and winking at their scummy companies linked in a claim.
I should put in for whiplash pretty sharpish ;D
-
I would try to avoid going through the insurance as a no fault claim or even notification to your insurance company will cost you. If you put your details into confused.com or such like and tick / fill out the section that indicates you've had an accident in the last five years, irrespective of whether or not it's your fault, then up to 25% of the available companies WILL NOT quote you.
Of course if they won't pay up then insurance is the only way - as long as they are insured.
You can always check if the vehicle is insured - but only on the specific day via the MIB database - but that will only tell you that the vehicle is insured, that doesn't necessarily mean that the DRIVER is actually covered for that vehicle.
