In the early 90's when a director/employee I "contracted out" and the sum that built up over about 5 years sits with Standard Life and they tell me it'll likely* pay me about £30 a week at age 65.

However "they" (#) say there will be £144 a week pension at today's rates when I retire at 66 instead of £106 so I suspect my contracted out stuff wont be added to the new pension but will be included in it.  ::)roll

I also "wisely" took out a tiny pension for a few years with "Equitable Life" (Oh they've gone on to life support so that'll be worth about £10 yes (ten) a month!)

I think the best thing I've got and want to hang on to is half a property owned outright with my bro. which pays us low hundreds each per month in rent after expenses and tax.

Oh and Mrs Gold who doesn't get state pension until she's 67 (!) and works for a school will get about £100 a month at today's rates on top of her state pension.

So as is always the case with the Gold clan we earn/get just enough to pay our taxes and too much income to qualify for any benefits!

*I doubt it
# HM Government, so I doubt that too!

Mind you I reckon if my health holds I'll work more and more part time (well, less and less if you catch my drift) to a point where I draw something from my window cleaning as I reckon paying someone to work it and drawing several hundred a month to oversee it is better than getting 20/30k by selling it.

Had a chat with a guy who did pensions when I was 25 and even then would have had to pay a lot every month ,also said if I only had a small pension it would stuff me when I retired ,one customer has the same problem the now says she is down a £100 because of savings

I am a young guy but I got Shares, Savings and ISA but I do pay £45 a month to Pension Pot and got a Pension from when I worked and I even got a Civil Service Pension for when I was apprentice!   But in total I got about 5k in pension pots

Look at the economy.
Has it got better?
No matter what we do now there is going to be absolutely nothing in the pot by the time I get to claiming a pension (I'm 31)

The only way anyone is going to get any money is by popping kids out, working cash in hand and claiming every benefit possible.

Pension?
Savings.

(Almost) retired at 65 (4 years ago) - started drawing my state pension - now £130.17 a week; my private pension which I paid in to for umpteen years - now £36.75 a week.

Haven't cleaned a window since 2009 but I'm better off now than ever I was when I did clean full time.

I clicked the 'other plan' option.

I'm building my pension plan by another means. 15 years ago it was suggested I put in £100 per week into a plan to give me the same earnings as I was on at the time.
What I was on at the time was a lot less than I needed!

Pension plans have crumbled some have been completely wiped out.

You need a plan B!

Which is that what you are doing?    If you got 13 kids! then you can have a whole gang on window cleaners.

Seriously I clean for a women who got 16 kids!!! Who I think all different fathers!  But I don't care about her personal life.   She pays me on time and always friendly! Plus inside is lovely.   Council fitted her a New Kitchen, Bathroom (3 bathrooms!)  SHe got a garage with electrics!  She had Large TV, GPlan sofa!, Decent Carpets,  She gets me to clean her carpets 3 times a year which about £70 a clean!   Again she pays me on time and I don't care!

I did same as SunShineCleaning I put money away each week for my Pension and lump sums each year!   I just don't trust Pension Plans!    Plus my bank does not say peep! They do keep wanting me to take Loans, Credit Cards and investment schemes which I just don't understand and I don't want!

What I'm working on is an income that will build and increase despite my own physical involvement.

Have you been drinking?
I'm 31 years of age.
With 2 kids.
And not a single penny of government money goes into my pocket.
I pay for everything.
Benefits? I hate them. And all they stand for.
If they were stopped it'd force the dossers to do something.
Anarchy (as the poorest people say) would NOT ensue.
I'm not debating. That is my opinion and I don't care what anyone else thinks.
I was poor as a kid because my parents focused on other things (good parents, just not interested in money)
I'm not poor (financially or otherwise) now cause I look after my own. I give them what they need. Not the government.

It was a wee joke,  Did not realise the wee face does not appear.

I would say when I grew up my parents were not mega rich but not poor,   However I am from a Forces Family so my growing up as a kid was different and all I remember was spending Summer Holidays on beach and playing football!
I remember when I finished my apprenticeship,  I did not even join the Dole Que I just went out and worked in Call Centre which I hated until something better came along!   as I did not see point of going to JobCentre!

I didn't. But I'm not having a go at you Chris. Just stating my opinion on the subject.
As for your customer with 16 kids. (I assume with no job & no fella)
She is a disgrace.
That said-there was a baker on telly a few years back. They had 16 kids and didn't claim anything other than the £20 and £13 most people get.
I love kids.
But firmly believe that if you can't afford to have them then you shouldn't.

I have a private pension and have had for 15 years. I currently pay around £270 a month into it and the contributions increase yearly by 10%. The government then add 20% to this and this is what gets invested. I don't know of another investment where you get 20% growth (or your highest tax rate) without the fund performing.

The pension I am supposed to get has decreased year on year - it was quite good, then the poo hit the fan in 2008 and the bank of England started quantitative easing. This had a direct, negative effect on annuity rates.
I am hoping that pound-cost averaging (see: http://www.moneyextra.com/dictionary/pound-cost-averaging-003482.html if you are unsure what this is) will eventually make up fall this fall.

Notwithstanding this, I am not prepared to take the risk of not investing in something, and for me this is just part of what I plan. We got rid of our mortgage last October by overpaying (it was a 25 year mortgage cleared in 15 years); we have a lot of money to spend renovating it over the next 3 or 4 years, by which time i'll be 54. This still leaves me a few years on the glass to put money into another investment in case the pension doesn't perform. I earn a good income at present and all being well, if my health permits, i'll keep on working into my 60's, all be on an (even more ;-) ) part time basis.

I guess I could be classed as lucky, but by hell I do find the more I work and save the luckier I get.

Where's the forces pension box?  It's based on rank and length of service; so a Staff Sergeant with 17 years service will be nice; at age 60 too.

It could've been much better though; if I'd served till my 22 year point (age 40), I would've gotten an immediate pension straight away; a big tax free lump sum and a monthly taxable pension.

Forces pensions are class.  Keep paying your taxes; they pay for my pension in 16 years time. ;D

Property (if you can afford it) will always be your best bet.
