Title: Scratched sills
Post by: Mr.G on October 21, 2013, 07:21:35 pm
I had a woman ask me if I'd take her on, but she would only have it done trad, no "horrible pole thing" because her last 2 window cleaners scratched the sills with the brushes
When I did the job I saw the sills were quite badly scratched, especially upstairs.
Can a WFP brush do that kind of damage??

I would imagine this is when either a sill brush isn't used or when using a non sill brush they have wiped the sills but not bothered to alter the angle of the brush, therefore brushing with the brush head itself rather than the bristles. I normally find on white upvc this leaves black scratch dots.

Yes, for sure the stock part of the brush can damage sills. (the much bulkier brush heads im referring to)

I would say Yes.

Best bet is if you use a softer brush for cills and bob will be your uncle and sorted.

Ah, I see, I did wonder if she was mistaken, obviously not then!

Definitely.
I scratched 3 sills on one customers house.
Fair play to him though, he let me put them right and is still a good customer now.

Yeah they can, but most gardiner brushes wont. But if you let the corners get hammered they will mark after  6 months - 12 months of use

When I scratched my customers sills I asked a UPVC fitter mate what to do, he said to finish, spray a silicon based polish like pledge or something cause it makes the top layer susceptible to dulling otherwise.
Don't know how true it is but he swore by it.
The sills I scratched were about 4 years ago now and they still look good

I found things like pledge work well but only for a short while as the elements soon wear them off, now I use a cheap car wax. Once I get them clean I give them a good coating and polish them up. They look great and stay that way for ages.

I have used a brand new Gardiner Xtreme brush with fan jets on a bungalow and i scratched 2 sills with the fan jets.

I am now more careful!
