I tested a pre filter the 5 micron that is supposed to remove chlorine & inpurities from water,
tds going was 380 / tds going out 380 ????????????????????
what a waste of money that was
-
I didnt think prefilter lowered tds?
Just there to protect membranes....
-
it says on the label
function to remove chlorine, inpurities, and dust in the water
application first stage in purifier

I've never tested a pre-filter before Midsy; have you? I mean have you anything to compare the one you tested with?
-
Hi Toshy
No ive not tested against any other , I just wanted to see if it would make a difference. and it don't.
you would think it would bring the tds down a bit
-
It may be removing items larger than 5 micron, but that's not to say your water has items larger than 5 microns therefore your TDS will remain the same to see any effect on TDS you would need 1 micron filters
Did you test to see if chorine was removed?

pre-filters do not lower tds.

how do i do that

TDS means Total Dissolved Solids.
I could be wrong but my understanding is that not all solids are dissolved and anything larger than 5 microns isn't dissolved, as it's in suspension in the water, so the tds wouldn't go down. Also, solids larger than 5 microns could clog up the ro filters. Hence the reason for a sediment filter.
-
The above is 100% correct , dissolved solids are not affected by the sediment filter.
The main reason for a sediment filter is to stop tbe carbon filter being blocked up before it stops removing chlorine to extend filter life .
-
You would need to buy a testing kit
Most likely an aquarium supplier but I wouldn't worry about it as the carbon filter takes care of chorine

Surely chlorine is a dissolved solid.
-
I stand corrected , chlorine is a dissolved solid .

I stand corrected , chlorine is a dissolved solid .
Chlorine is a gas.
Used in first world war as a weapon. It dissolves in water just like oxygen does.
So no, it's not a dissolved solid.
-
This is like an A level science lesson..not that I took it of course! :)
-
so what's the conclusion on the filter ?????????????? is it a rip off?
-
Would have thought it's okay

Chlorine isnt a dissolved solid so your tds wouldnt go down. Tds only measures the solids.
As ian has said chlorine is a gas dissolved in water (just like oxygen)but it would harm your membranes so the prefilters are there to protect your membranes

No.
Keep it in case the First World War starts again.

A tds meter is basically a conductivity meter which measures the amount of positively
charged ions dissolved in the water.
These raise the level of conductivity and show up on the tds meter. Things like salt and so on.
Anything that has negatively charged ions will not show up on a tds meter but will
still be dissolved in the water. Sugar, alcohol and carbon dioxide and so on.
-
Chlorine does not exist as a gas when it is dissolved in water.
As to the rest of the science I don't know.
