So is everyone ready for the snow?
Have you started to offer Gritting Services? I had a office ask 'Can you grit?' which all I done is sub-contract this :D plus what are you going to do with all your pipes in van if it does snow?

if its light snow on the ground then ive found i can carry on with my cold wfp system.i put oil filled radiator in van overnight which is standard practice for me on below freezing nights.
a tub of grit/ice melt in van and a sweeping brush
extra flask of hot water just in case my jets freeze up
start a bit later and finish a bit earlier.
if its heavy snow and very difficult to drive around i take the time off and dip into my emergency fund if need be.
the longest amount of time ive had off was about 3 weeks a few years ago during the heavy snow in january.that was very extreme weather though.not usual here in the north west! ;D

Had the same lost about 3 weeks, very easily pulled back in the warmer months
A couple of old sleeping bags over the tank keeps a light frost at bay if it gets too bad then the van
goes into the garage.
That's another reason why I like the Dispatch it will fit into most garages.

when it comes to snow in march of this year I think I win .... was like this for 3 weeks >:(

We are ready for the snow, We have already started to warn customers about safety and how we will not come out if its not safe to work.
I had phone calls saying 'Don't come to my area as it snowing' and other saying 'There no snow lying here' which I said 'yes but there snow here is bad'
However our gritting I done with few office blocks is okay and said 'We will be here as long its not heavy snow'

I have made absolutely no plans, never have and never will, pump and all hoses are quick release and just get taken indoors overnight when its freezing.
To be fair though I am on the south coast and I think you are in Scotland re your post other day about licenses.
Snow does stop me working but not for any reason relating to my window cleaning equipment.
its the road conditions, down south as soon as the roads are white for some inexplicable reason everything grinds to a halt, the council seems unable to cope and drivers seem to be completely inept at driving .

Never had a day off in all the snow just gotta carry on as usual put the fog wash on, Spose I'm lucky as we mainly do commercial so don't have to go down all the residential roads where it gets impossible 😀

Mortgage still goes out every month, so so do I!

winter tyres on the van and fire up the hot water heater, carry on as normal
-
I dont work in the snow or in anything under -3.
-
Van will go in the garage as normal but when it gets to cold in goes the heater to .
Anti freeze in warm trad water for some windows and doorways and I'll start to stock pile 25 ltr drums soon just in case the frost and ice gets to the ro/di
Plus drums are easy to take in side and de frost than 200 ltr tank or and some long johns for me

This
I am getting new tyres next week for winter and when the temp drops properly I fill with hot water and bring in anything at night that might freeze
Not looking forward to any of that though if it comes again.
Hate winter

I always fit winter tyres to my van now during the cold, too dangerous to drive without them in snow/ice,

My van has to be parked in the car park to the block of flats where I live as it's all permit parking around here. The road out from the car park has a 1:8 gradient that has an awkward 90 bend on it so if I can get up that, then I work.
What makes it worse is that the car park is on the east side of a hill and the road out faces north. At one point earlier this year I couldn't move the van for just over 3 weeks. I was tearing my hair out. I just hope the weather this winter won't be as bad as the last two.

Mick the Greek obviously you havnt got mortgage and high vans to pay for if you don't work in the snow or - 3 are you still living at home with parents and cart your wfp around on a bike ? I don't know how you pay the bills and stuff if you can't work as -3 and snow could be around for a few weeks !!!! 🌞

Yep + 1 with Darren, good answer 🌞

If you cant survive not working for a few weeks of snow or bad weather then maybe you shouldnt be preaching or making assumptions about me and my lifestyle as you couldnt be any further from the truth.
I plan smart and i work smart!.
The reason i dont work in the snow or if below-3 is simply because i dont need too and i dont like working when its not safe to do so, customers realy dont care for there windows to be cleaned when its snowing ! Last year i lost just over 2 weeks, the year before was over 3 weeks but who cares i plan agead to cope for such times and also the fact that i only need to do 20-30 hours a week per van to cover my business where i have built it so compact and thought out means catching up is easy if need be.
-
Ross-can't you get the road gritted? When we lived in a flat it got gritted by the Gardiner.
Greeky-isn't the Greek economy on its arse? Wonder why...
Darren - the gritting lorry can't get down it as it's to narrow on the bend. During this years snow we ( a few other tenants and me) managed to get the council to dump a load of grit at the top of the roadway into the car park but after spending back breaking hours gritting, it made no difference as due to the steepness of the incline, the grit acted like small ball bearings under the tyres.

Mick the Greek so what's the message lol !!! As we not on about the customers don't care it's about paying out as I've got mortgage, vans insurance other insurances to pay, shopping elec & water bills, fuel costs car insurance and fuel again also tax and corporation tax bill vat bill also wages so there's no chance in hell I could take 2 or 3 weeks out !!!! Just because of some snow. Get yaself a hot wash and snow shovel. If you can take that time out and catch up you must have a little business which is ok but I would still have thought you still
Got lots of payout unless you getting benefits mmmm maybe !!!! 😉

Id look into reorganising your business then if there is no way in hell you could take 2 weeks out as cant cover your living costs and expencies??.
Maybe up your prices or something??

Id rather not work in snow or ice for 2 or 3 weeks than be stupid and work in the snow or ice and break my neck or snow shovel everywhere and get sued when people injur themselves on the areas you have cleared.
work smart, get the work at the right prices.i feel sorry for anybody who charges low prices and has to work like donkeys for little money.
-
i agree with mick and windiewasher on this.danny you should be able to survive 3 weeks off if the snow is really heavy and roads are near on impossible to get around.
of course if theres the slightest chance i can get even 3 or 4 hours in a day during very bad weather i will!as i hate getting behind and losing money! ;D
im a firm believer in having at least a couple of grand spare in an "emergency fund" account specifically for very extreme weather to dip into if need be but i often find my "rolling debt" starts to come in when im not working that covers bills etc.
i imagine danny its harder if you have a couple of vans and staff wages to pay though.lucklily extremely bad weather doesnt come round too often! ;D
best wishes to you all

Fellas its not all about the money yes I may have a big mortgage and own a four bed house drive a fancy car got new vans but we do office cleaning that toilets have to be cleaned. We are full busy every day with important jobs. I know for you all who do houses yes I can understand they don't expect them to be cleaned but we do mainly commercial.
Don't think the bank would understand if I say I yeah can't pay yous this month for my mortgage or van lease people o yeah right they understand not !!!!
Most on here prob sole traders rent a flat don't have much to pay out as others so unfortunately a little snow ain't gonna stop us from working and anyway that's what insurance is for public, employee liability and van insurances
Good luck to who can take 2 or 3 weeks off in the year residential is a different field to commercial customers !!!! 😳😳😜
-
fair play danny.yes no 4 bed house here!,no kids either! :Di rent a nice little flat, cheap second hand van and car for leisure.low overheads, mainly domestic although i have some nice commercial jobs as well.sole trader.

Nice one Daz least your honest, that's what I like about ya you do give honest and good advice ( most of the time )
Have a good day, is it crap up North like it is down here in the South !!! 😁
-
fit winter tyres onto your van and you wont need to wait for the council to grit the roads,
-
Scrimmble and don't forget to mention the hot wash he he 😜
-
even in the bad winter I only missed about 2 weeks all in all and I only worked with a cold water system! I clean all jobs as normal ( except doors or windows above walkways) if I do have to I salt the ground after.
I text the night before so they no were coming.
This year I could really do with buying a fogwash but I will have to see how my funds go! I want a website building aswell ???

Sorry but i have a mortgage on a large victorian terraced and have a unit and yes i clean houses aswell as many commercial propertys.
My safety is far more important than anything else.
Charge the right prices and have as many days off and holidays as i like.
worry about losing 2 or 3 weeks work,no because i have a commercial contract that covers all my bills nearly which is done in 3 or 4 days in a month.

I work with a 4x4, so getting about in snow isn't a problem.
Having said that-
I choose not to work in crap weather!
To me, that's what being self employed is all about, having the choice
