Title: Question for the chemists amongst us
Post by: garry22 on October 15, 2013, 02:59:27 pm
I was called out to a vomit job today (it actually happened over the weekend). Someone had been sick following a dinner party (with loads of drink taken).

I was expecting a vile smell and a huge stain on the carpet. Before I went upstairs, I asked the owner if they had tried to use any cleaning products themselves.

She said someone at the party suggested soda water so they sprayed the area liberally with that and then covered it with a towel. There was virtually no smell left in the room.

Now I know that bicarbonate of soda can act as a deodoriser but surely it would not be present in sufficient quantities to (pretty much completely) remove such a pungent smell?

I removed all of the stain and any slight remaining odour with M-Power and hwe.

Strangely some vomit isn't that pungent especially if a lot of drink has been consumed and little food.

I guess it would depend on how digested the food was, if it was only just freshly eaten food and drink then it would not have started to break down etc and hence no smell.

Then again i could be talking complete b******s ;D

I've been called out to vomit where there was virtually no smell and others where I was nearly sick myself. Worst ones are usually hotel rooms where they've had a skinfull and a curry or kebab, lovely.

Or spaghetti and haven't chewed well and you have to pick it all out first.

actually the best one had to be the dog that had eaten a bird and puked it on every step going up to the owners room to tell them.

Then they opened the living room door to show me this lovely velvet pile cream rulux and cotton chintz suite.

They were totally destroyed. The dog was a gun dog and a pigeon covered in soot had come down the chimney and it had chased it around the room before killing it then eating it.

I wish I had taken pictures.
