Hi Guys,
I have recently been pushing the blog side of my website with a view to gaining more of an audience, and if this also boosts my website within google then I've achieved what I set out to do.
Have a look and let me know what you think:-

Hi Stu,
Like the content. Just not sure that the centralised text makes for the easiest read.
If it was justified or lined up on the left it may be easier.
My blog has generated traffic so its all to the good.
I am however no expert.
Cheers
Neil

The point about bogging is about being an authority on what people are looking for and also that other authorive sites will link to.
If you post a blog about what you do in Cleethorps or perhaps you visited Mrs Smith and made her carpets clean....well no one will be interested and no one will link to it.
Lets say, it suddenly occurs to you that many of your customers have dogs that pee on the carpet and they want the stains removing.
That would be an indicator that many people are searching for a solution for dog pee removal.
You would therefore create a blog all about dog pee removal and how to help people out. If it's a good blog post then you would start to rank in the search engines for that post and other sites would start linking to you. You then become an authority.
Also posting your url on forums encourages lazy people with no imagination to copy your blog if not your whole website ::)roll

Mike, re; blogging on points of interest... I think that was what Ian Harper was trying to achieve with his blogging.
Re; signatures. There is no SEO value but at least it makes us identifiable. The other forum insists that members use their real names (which in my opinion, lessens the aggravation / abuse). As we do not have a PM facility, it is the only way we have to contact members. I also take your point about visible sites. I have a few that I would never reveal here.
-
So everyone's blogging now. ;D
-
This was Mike Boxalls response some years ago regarding PM's. They were stopped because they were being abused by a supplier.
I'll be honest with you guys. As Doug has said, with the old system (the system that's still used by another forum) it was possible for administrators to 'monitor' the 'personal' messages. If you suspected someone was abusing the system then it could be checked and dealt with. With this system it just can't be done (plus we don't really want to have to check it and we don't have the time!)
Yes, the message system was useful and if there was a way to stop 'competitors' abusing it then we would reinstate it. Unfortunately, at the moment there isn't.
As Mark has said, I'm sure we lose out by not having it but the blunt reality is that our reputation is more important to us. I'm not going to be drawn into any further dabate about it - I thought it was only polite to answer.
You certainly need to be aware that personal or private messages on most forums are neither personal or private!
Regards
Mike

I'm not.......
have only just worked out how to switch a computer on.. ;D

I don't get blogging, you make a topic so informative that people feel compelled to place a link on other websites to it, then google picks up these links and sees the blog as something useful so ranks it on google searches.....
Is that the drift of it?
The problem is I've never seen an article written by a carpet cleaner that impressed me so much I wanted to share it with anyone, plus how did the person giving the link find the article in the first place?
We are not booker prize winning authors , most have difficulty creating readable paragraphs and using words containing more that 2 syllables how can we creating blogs that normal people find so riveting they post a link to it?
-
Well Mike you seem quite good at it :)
-
But my blog is just my insane rantings, posted to annoy the aliens that live under my bed, not to help my website rank on google.

Many people use internet searches to solve a problem such as how to fix your car or perhaps how to use wordpress.
Many results will turn up on blogs and may have been written by professional bloggers.
If you feel fairly confident that you can give people advise on a certain subject and maybe put together a 2 or 300 word article then think about putting a page together.
What I generally do is perhaps before putting together an article, spend a couple of days writing notes and ideas that come into my head.
Also you could look at other articles on the same subject to give you ideas, but put your own slant or improvements into what others have said.
If you know what you want to say but not much good at writing, then you could put all your notes down into a word doccument including links to similar articles and send it off to an article writer which is not a lot of money.
https://www.odesk.com/o/profiles/browse/skill/article-writing/ is an example.
Also putting a few quality pictures with alt tags will help.
Then you would need to sprinkle a few links to your article, to where you think it would benifit the readers.
Earlier this year I wrote a blog page and two bloggers have linked to it. One with a keyword hyperlink and the other took a photo from the page and put in into his blog. The photo links to my site.
The idea is to help visitors to your site and improve seo by getting a few extra links to your site hopefully.
-
Mike you sound like you know what you are on about & write intelligently, I would guess your blog is good, and still only 2 people have linked to it in nearly a year.
this is the point I'm making, are blogs worth the effort or would it be better to put our online efforts into more productive activities

I would say it is worth the effort if you are able to do it.
Many people visiting your site have a problem. If you can address that problem in an article then there is a good chance that the visitor who has seen the article will have confidence in you because you know what your on about and it's a sure bet you'v converted the visitor.
However, many people don't go as far as visiting your blog. On occasion when I've gone out to do a quote, they may ask a question regarding lets say, removing elephant droppings from carpet. You then say, did you see the article on my web site how I remove elephant droppings from carpet. They then regard you as an expert who is good at problem solving and in all probabilty they won't look else where.
I wrote an article which took me about 4 hours to do some time ago about stains. Within a few days a lady visited my site who had many problems with certain stains related to the article. She told me on the phone that she had read the article or blog and could I come over and do an estimate and give her advice. I got the job in a large home which was sucsessfull and she recommended me to her friend.
So those few hours in a day off sort of paid for it's self times over. The way I see it, is just being credible and dropping breadcrumbs however small can generate things unexpectedly sometimes.
But it's not all about blogging....it's how you present yourself generally on your web site that matters is what I find.
Mike you sound like you know what you are on about & write intelligently, I would guess your blog is good, and still only 2 people have linked to it in nearly a year.
I think to achieve 2 links to one article is not bad amongst millions of web sites.
I would't regard myself as intelligent, I left school when I was 15 with no qualifications.
With writing.....it just seems to come to me. I'm far from perfect and often have to use a spell checker although at 11 I was the best in school at spelling and it seems to have eluded me ever since!

Do people have to find your Blogs Ezine Articles or is the the Links that you put in.
Would Article have to be about Carpet Cleaning or Could it be about the pitfalls of Renting Houses.
About Finding A Dentist
Or How to Make Cup Cakes
providing you had a link back to your domains
-
The blogs that I have seen have no authority, that isn't to say the are not well written or informative. They are not going to get seen as the pages have no search engine optimization, and Google will not give them any ranking, so the blogs will not show up in the first few pages.

Yes they are only for links, if you write a really good article, then maybe it will get picked up by a good website, then the link will be worth a bit, but its a good way to get link diversification.
