Title: stopping ro freezing
Post by: paul ette on October 10, 2013, 08:31:33 am
so last winter i had a little ro that i kept in the house, but i now have a bigger ro that has 2 20 inch membranes that is in my van, last winter i just used to put a heater on in the morning to unthaw things before i went work, now im worried because i have the membranes in van and cant do it.
so do the jackets you buy to put over them keep them from freezing?? or do you need to also put a heater on in there through the night?
really dont like the idea of having a heater on in the van through night in case it catches fire ???

Unfortunately, if you feel this way about a heater in the van, thenyou can't leave the r/o in the van, period.

We use an electric heater with a frost thermostat and haven't ever had a frozen van - neither have I ever had the r/o in the van either.

I built a seperate box for my r/o last winter with a tube heater inside - its in my garage, but it could also be in an outside shed, provided it had water and electricity.

I use two aquarium heaters, 500W ones cheap off ebay. Turn the thermostat down to minimum (16c I think) and leave em on all night - 16C isn't much but it keeps the whole van frost free and makes the hoses a bit easier to handle the next morning.

Keep heater on during the night - I used a oil filled heater from B and Q everything fine during last winter - Only lost 1 day due to snow. Keep your electric bills and show them to your accountant to show the increase in usage pretty sure you can claim part of it back.
