Use a steam gun - any type will do. Agitate with the nozel or brush of the steam gun and straight away finish off with a towell doused in whatever solvent you like to use. only takes 10-20secs. I was using rid a gum, then went to solvex which did exactly the same but cheaper. Now using low odour white spirit which does the same and costs pennies!! ;D

By the way,
I speak from experience as I remove thousands of wads from a school!!

We also do massive mount of gum and steamer with wire brush attachment is the best if there is a lot of it. If it is just one or two spots and not worth setting up the steamer for or waiting for it to heat up, the best gum remover is the texatherm oran gel. Last year we did 3000 + bedrooms at Aberystwyth university and the was a lot of gum and blue tac. We spent some time testing the products on the market as the gum issue was a big factor of the job.
The texatherm product was the best by quite a long way.
Steamers are first choice but there are issues on carpet tiles and stuck down needle punch so you need to be aware of these. These issues are not so great with wallpaper steamers so very often use the wallpaper steamers on carpet tiles.
