what type of lubricant do you use to lubricate quick connectors? i'm guessing petroleum type grease would rot the o rings? any suggestions?

I spit on mine before insertion ;)
There should be no issue with the o rings with a petroleum grease - even the black ones ! sorry non viton ones ( will I get grassed for that Roger ? ) . Grease will attract grit.

You might do, you might have to ask the "grass" ;)
But flush your connectors after use with water and lube every now and again, then you should be ok.
