I have observed so many threads on this forum there ie a very large that never say a word on the forum.Just look at the detail on the right of the thread and see the numbers the higher the readers and the lessor ones who take the trouble to participate in writing. Do these 200 to 300 people feel they have nothing to say or share with this forum.Maybe they are the silent majority like our some od politicians can only have the answer of "NO COMMENT"
Is my observation have any truth or figment of my imagination.e.g 31respondents and over 400 lurkers and 4 verses 188 with not a responce.
What do you think , it would be interesting to hear from the silent lurkers why they have nothing to say. ;D ;D ;D ;D

I think 'silent lurkers' is a little unfair!. I have only been using this forum for a short time, but here are few points which could explain what you are noticing.
1, The times were I have contributed to a thread, my comments seem go largely ignored. To those with a skin not quite as thick as mine, this apparent clique-ness might be a little off-putting, and doesn't exactly encourage people to take part.
2, I have often looked at a thread title, clicked on it, but found it wasn't about what I thought it was.
3, If a thread has a lot of posts, it is going to take some time to sift through these and decide whether or not you have anything to contribute to the discussion.
4, Finally(!), and this is especially so if taking into account the previous comment, taking part in a discussion can take up a lot of time, an hour can be sucked out of your day just like that!. Those who have a lot of other demands on their time, just find it easier to have a look at what is being said, whether or not there are useful hints or comments being made to make their lives easier. They may simply not be able to take part, even if they might like to.
This does not, in my opinion, make 'silent lurkers' the undesirable element you seem to be implying. We are all different, and not necessarily looking for the same out of a forum as you!.

lol, I love reading some of the stuff on here sometimes.
Smithie, the read count on the right is how many different reads there have been since the thread has started.
So every time there's a new post on that thread, and anyone reads it, the post count goes up. Not how any different members have read it, just total reads since it started.
Here's an example.
On the chat section here, there's a thread that's titled "jogging". 2200 posts, and over 11200 reads. That's not 11200 different readers!! That's how many reads the thread has had since it started, be it by people who've posted in it, or just a few members who use that section of the forum.
If you click on the control panel, you can scroll down and see who is online at the moment, usually about 200 people, and just below that, who was online in the last 24 hours, usually about 400 to 500 people.
The total number of members on CIU is about 27,000, so about 1 to 2% are online at any one time.
Now that's only the same bunch of a few hundred people on CIU who actually use the forum, and at least half of them are carpet cleaners!!!! It was started by the owners who are CARPET cleaners!!
It really does make me laugh when I read about how all the windies on here are on their forum. ;D It's originally a carpet cleaners forum.
Lurkers, as you call them, are people who read comments and threads on here now and again, but don't post. Where's the harm in that?

If someone just reads the postings and doesn't want to comment, that's up to them.
Having written that, and on the off topic section of the forum, sometimes some threads get read by a lot of members and they don't post anything - which is obviously their choice. Considering it's mainly rubbish and waffle that gets posted, and anyone can post almost what ever they want, I'm surprised there isn't more posted.

Dear Mr Cosy. I think you have mistaken me for someone else. I have a fair understand how forums work as we do have a forum in darkest Africa. I did own a computer there we did not always have power to run it but..... that's Africa. When the elephant was to lazy to run around and charge the computer batteries. This why I think I know so much about batteries.
I also know at my age most would feel I am not in tune with 2013 mad cons a and understand what a lurker is.It would be nice to hear from some of these voiceless members of this forum.
Some times all were heard from the banter fobes and we need so level headed input. I believe many of the silent ones have a place in this forum but feel the brunt of the banter fobedics.
I am sorry to all the so called "lukers " but some times you need a crowbar to lever or extract you out of the dark.
Thankyou to the few that have be reborn contributors or ex lurkers who have come out of the dark and responded.

I read most of what you've said there. Sorry, you seem to have misunderstood that I was trying to help you. I think it's better for us both if I paste your ID into my mong/ignore list, so we won't be able to read eachothers posts. That's a good feature on this forum, it allows us to blend out members who we don't want to hear from.
So enjoy your time on here. I don't expect we'll miss eachother .

Simon,
I'm one of those who would have appeared to have ignored some of your postings, but I can ussure you I haven't. There have been a couple of excellent posts you have made recently with regard to payload of vans and using a car rather than a fit for purpose van which were truely exceptional.
I appreciated those posts as you put them in writing far better than I have done previously. My failure was to recognise that in a reciprical post, which I'm sorry about. I wish we had some sort of 'excellent post' button we could click to highlight a good post.
Please keep it up.
Thanks

iam saying nothing ;D ;D ;D

I've been a member since 2006 but don't post too often as I'm not too great typing and all too often I'm happy just reading the topics that are being discussed and laughing at some of you guys when ya throw ya toys out the pram ,it's a shame everyone's views can't be respected as we have lost a lot of members over the years when some one shouts them down , but it is interesting to see the different views on here
Marc
-
Well said marc. for someone with typing problems you deliver a good message, well bone.
-
Simon's post is interesting. When I first posted here I felt the same, 4 years on maybe I would be viewed as part of the clique? I certainly don't feel part of a clique.
A thank you button would be a good idea.
-
I must me classed as a silent lurker :). As I am relatively new to the forum and window cleaning I rarely get the opportunity to add anything of interest to the subjects. I have however picked up a lot of useful tips on window cleaning and the running of my business (thank you all) and as I gain more experience I hope to add my opinion more often.
So please be patient with us "silent lurkers" we might just be a bit shy ;)

Hi spruce, very kind words, but I really wasn't complaining about it, just offering a couple of suggestions as to why smithie is seeing what he is seeing. Ultimately, on all forums, certainly all the ones I have taken part in, there is always a massive difference in the amount of members (silent lurkers) who just read a thread, than contributers. I really don't see it as an issue, but I felt obliged to offer an opinion, from the point of view of someone who hasn't been using this forum for long. Apologies to anyone who took offence to my use of clique-ness, that is perhaps a little harsh, but from what I have seen and read, there seems to be a group of maybe a dozen members, who all seem to know each other well, and have a bit of banter or whatever, which is fine. Point is, they always seem to just respond to each others comments, as opposed to anyone elses. For someone new to the forum, trying to elbow their way into this, probably seems as intimidating as going up to a group of strangers in a pub and just joining in the conversation!.
Here, for what it is worth, is a couple of other points which I feel would help.
1, An section for new members to introduce themselves and be welcomed by existing members might help break the ice?.
2, During the process of registering, it states you must use your own, or company name as a user name. Firstly, why?, this in itself could well put off potential members. As long as the people who run the forum know who you are, I don't see why you cant use whatever user name you want. Secondly, having read this, and used my own name for my user name, I come on to the forum to find members such as frankybadboy and smudger, surely this is their own, or company names?!. So what is all that about?.
-
Thanks

Some time back there was a bit of a spat where threats were made. Things got a bit heated, and people were banned. As usual the people involved were anonymous, so the powers that be felt that it would be best for people to be open and honest about who they were.
So many people objected that nothing was really done about enforcing the real name policy, in fact it spawned a whole new generation of silly names.
-
I would never use my own name.
-
I read a lot of the posts but its to learn stuff or just to know whats going on. Most the time I have heard the same thing before but if its a new question and I know the answer then I tend to comment.
-
Thanks

I think a lot of the time people view the thread cos they think they have something to contribute, but after reading it, they realise somebody has given the same reply already.
Eitherf that or they ust want to find out the answer for themselves.

Hi Guys, Maybe its because i am from the other side of the pond but i would also agree that there can be cliques on the different sections of this forum, now having been in the industry since 1982 i have developed thick skin and can handle cliques which i think its fair to say can be found on many other forums to. I do think it would be much better if members used their proper names or company names and email addresses as there could be some very productive networking shared on private emails, this is my experience as i have developed some very good clients from this forum by guys emailing us direct as if they dont want other members to know that they are doing business with us which of course i wont complain about, on saying that i have picked up some great tips and techniques from this forum since joining and am very appreciative of them as it has helped us to develop other new business and clients.

My dad used to keep lurchers .they didn't say much either .they were pretty good out working tho .

+ 1 like the lurchers one. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I think I will become a lurcher as well. At least your head does not get shot off. I am now going on a lurch to eat my sarnies and a cup of tea. message from my Nockie 1610 brick.or my b phone.
-
you do know a lurcher is a dog right?
-
It's because 90% of what is written is utter rubbish. Most will have a casual glance and see if there is anything useful and after finding that there isn't they get on with other, more productive things.
Other post well and are pulled apart by the regular 'trolls' for daring to have an opinion that differs to there own.
In the 10 years I've been using this forum, on and off, it has gone to the dogs somewhat.
I think forums are like pubs, they become what the regulars make it.
