They'll be along, followed closely by the haters, doubters, moaners and whingers.  It's been professionally fitted by a vehicle conversion company. I have no worries. This is the sixth vehicle they have done for me. It's fine.  :)

It's the strap that does it, the very sight of a strap on a tank brings the H&S and Motor Insurance experts crawling out from every nook & cranny, spewing their superior knowledge onto your lap!!!! ;D

how much did that all set you back mate? give us a breakdown if you can!

The poles fit in the canopy perfectly with no holes cut. They won't go in straight, but will diagonally.

Breakdown as follows:
Truck: £3900. Private sale.
Tank: £230.
Controller, pump and DI vessel: £227 from Daqua.
Reel & hose: £150.
Professional fitting: £336.

Total cost: £4843.

My budget was £5000. It's been on the road about 5 weeks and has earned about £3000 profit already. By the end of Sept I should break even, then I'm in profit.

The tyres will be expensive to replace because they are comp tyres with tread up the side walls, top of the range off-road tyres. This truck will do a lot of off road on solar sites, not on rough terrain, but just in muddy fields, so those tyres will get me anywhere. Can't wait to have some pics of it in full combat action!!! ;D

.................... so how is the tank fitted?

I use a van myself but have got it stuck a few times on mega steep drives and once on soft grass.

Nice looking truck, couple of things.

What exactly did your £336 'professional fitting' get you? That's one expensive ratchet strap and sheet of ply.

Your logic re it earning you £3k profit and soon will be breakeven is flawed.

It's not just ratchet strapped in. I took an empty truck to them before i went on holiday a few weeks ago. All parts were delivered to the fitters and the whole set up was fitted while I was away. When I picked it up, the only thing I needed to put in was a pole or two. So he fitted the tank, did the electrics, plumbing, ply board, supplied hose, connectors et al. The £336 was including all parts and VAT. I think it was a bit of a bargain.

The 3k is work that has been done by the truck, after expenses, that would not have got done had I not had it. Another month of that, and he truck would have paid for itself. After that, the truck begins to make me a profit. Sorry if it wasn't clear.

Only things left to do are vinyl the windows and sign write it. Had my new solar logo completed this week, so another couple of weeks and it will be completed finished.  :)

I've researched the ratchet strap argument with a friend if mine who is a maths teacher.
The actual strap is not a problem at all.
It's what it's strapped to that COULD cause a problem.

How big is the tank is there space for a hot wash 2nd pump and reel too?

I would just take out my 400l upright custom setup give it to them so won't have much more to spend then that £336

So you say that you have had others too? Do you prefer these in my case it was something more practical and that looks good for personal use and comfortable to drive but with you do you actually prefer them for work if so what's the reason?
Also what mileage did you pick up for that price? And are these ones the best or is the newer model which starts at 2006 better?

Tank is 500L
There is room for another pump and reel, but if I wanted it for 2 man, I would run 2 reels from one pump.

I've not had any pick-ups before, this is my first.

This is not a family car, was not bought to look good or for comfort or economy.  It was bought solely so that I can do solar farms without getting stuck in the mud.

It's got 56K on the clock.

I have no idea if the new ones are better.  I bought this because I don't like high mileage vehicles.  It's a mental thing but I have to sell vehicles before they have 100K on the clock. :o  That number scares me!   :o

How would you have set it up different?  Had the tank mounted to the roof instead of the floor? ::)roll

Don't mind if it looks ridiculous for window cleaning because it will be in muddy fields and on dusty farms cleaning solar panels.

I don't care about economy.  Diesel costs are in the price of the jobs.

What vehicle do you drive?

I would have had a proper baffled tank fitted, and a hot water system

right i see so there is a point to having a l200, fair enough its a tool for the job i had visions of it being used as a regular residential vehicle where the most the 4x4 system would be used would be to tackle a speed bump,

I drive a fiat doblo maxi

Nice truck mate , l200 engines from that Era are best
As for straps Holding  a tank in place  , there is nowt wrong
With that as long as its rated high enough.
Good use of £5k me thinks.
If you need to replace tyres try
Nenevalleyoff road.
Silverline tyres.
John craddocks 4x4 ltd
Or paddockspares.
Couple of them are landrover spare pArts stores, but also sell good
Range of tyres , cheaper than you think

This is an old pic of my L200. Been brilliant for me and will been buying another when I get my next van on the road. I have modified it since as this was 5 years ago but tank and reels are the same.

Got a new shape L200 Animal, we use it for pressure washing and gutter work, or when we go off for an internal job/high level clean. It's such a great tool.

Just got a l200 long bed its barbarian model so got all the extras such a great tool better than a van for carrying weight. Most vans have car engines are just not man enough. I had a t5 transporter before this which is just a vw golf engine. Felt like it couldn't cope even when remapped, l200 you don't even notice 500 litres in the back  :)

Great post Tom. Will bear it in mind about the tyres. Not sure how many miles I will get out of proper off road tyres, but these bad boys are all brand new 3 weeks before I bought the truck, so won't need to worry for a while.  :D

I agree! I had driven it a few places with an empty rear. Even with everything fitted and a full tank, it felt exactly the same! It's almost as if they were designed with pulling weight in mind!  ;)

They have a similar payload to some vans but I think they just cope better with it. Vans are great but only for occasional heavy loads. Also the load bed is designed to get wet which another plus point. It does like a drop or two of diesel 30 mpg at most  :(

thanks for the post solar looks like you answered everything!
some good input, nice to see others have pictures and l200s too,
when my van is loaded it moves like crap. it would be a dream to have 500l!! and moving like nothing i guess the car engines that most vans have just dont cut it for regular payloads ,

so one very good reason to get an l200 is the power and handeling loaded i guess too,
also the payload on an l200 is 1.1k more then a connect 230,i think they are cool and 5k well speint for you steve it means you dont get stuck in the mud for everyone els it means you drive a real machine with over half a tone and not even feel it, looks the stuff also i cant be alone in thinking getting up in the morning to a neat black pick up then driving it to work has to beat a van if i splashed out on one i would want to install a hot wash too so i got the lot , 500l or 650 it has the payload i actually think its more then 1.1k

The T5 transporter is a lovely van and nice to drive but when it has water in it just feels weaker than the l200. I have a work section in the back and  all round vehicle for the weekend. Not saying vans are bad i have always had them but after having a truck it feels better IMO.

Also regarding window cleaning with its 1150kg payload and 2,700kg of pulling power it is going to feel like a Feather with a 500l tank compared to most vans, why can't some of you see the fun factor and Practicality !

Lol ... But think you'll find that has more to do with the landrover
Having mud or all terrains on compared to the bishis road tyre .
I've driven isuzus toyotas and l200 s off road and with correct
Mud tyres the only thing that a landrover has an advantage is
In the real rough stuff ie ditch crossing where defender has less over hang
The Isuzu was a match for the 110 defender .

Maybe for yours Tom  ;).

The thing about Defenders is it's getting more and more rare to find a 'standard' one. How many people have modified their L200s. Not many.

HD landrover springs front and rear , huskey winch, bfg muds, vnt turbo and full face intercooler.
no wonder she only returned 20 mpg. hehehe.

My mate had a l200 animal. On the road I must admit it was a far more comfortable, civilised beast. Off the road, it was a bit of a joke to be honest, even compared to my standard(ish) series 3. L200s are just too car like for me, bend a sill on a Defender and its a hammer job, (£50 for a new sill at worst) and its like new. Bend an L200 and its £££.

That is why we use them for work. If, when I bought my first Defender, I'd bought an L200 instead, it would now be scrap.

thanks for posting this I need a new vehical and was looking at the pickup have got a 500l tank. Sometimes we use 750 sometimes and put 10 25L cans in back of van as well. Could you put a  trailor behind ans pull another 250L? kerb weight and all that.

also would be looking at an older l200, pre 05 . Mind made up now. We have a llot of rural upland territory, and wwe could get to this when the snow is on the ground. with the transit we are sometimes not able to get up to some work till easter. Only trouble is our private toilet (bucket in back of van) would be gone. Any sugestions

For pre-2005 or Classic shape L200s makes sure you do your homework or find someone that knows there stuff - The more mechanics and owners I spoke too and owners reviews I read the more the issues cropped up. It seems that you can be fortunate and run one to 300,000 miles with only routine servicing or it might bankrupt you ! There's lots of very good pattern parts available through people like Milners and lots of rubbish too. Join one of the owners clubs and talk to them first - it may just save you a lot of grief, time and money.

Yep, you can carry and tow. You can get a custom tank built up to 670 litres and still have room for a DI, pump etc. tank is about £500.
