Title: Transit or trafic?
Post by: Jonny D on August 28, 2013, 08:42:48 am
My 03 trafic is due it mot and I have a feeling it's going to cost a bit to get it through. My brother has just swaped his golf for an 04 transit and said I can use that as he won't be needing it during the day and will only be using it to go to the shop and that after work. I'm just looking to see what's more reliable? my trafic has 157000 miles and has been nothing but trouble this year the transit has 137000ish and has just had an mot. It's just to last me another year until I get some money put aside and get a decent van. Any thoughts?

It sounds like a good offer but you'd still be reliant on your brother. People often say things like that but in reality it's not always as good as it sounds.
But you know your brother better than me and if you can live with any lost days when he wants to use his van then it could be a good way to tide you over.

i agree with the above, however if your happy to do so what i would do is wait until that traffic completely blows up dont fix any more things and then get in the transit the next day, scrap the traffic and have a day out with the money, hell you never know, get a pre mot done first if you can get it through by hook or by crook and it lasts six months that' money towards a new van, or your brothers transit when you break his starter motor which you will do.  if its the duratorque engine on the transit if you ever have to replace the clutch ive heard that you should replace the duel flywheel with normal

Always best to rely on your own steam, ASAP.
That year Trafic is a money pit after 100k, you've done well to get the extra 60k out of it.
Newer ones are great though.

Or got lucky. I was meticulous with mine but at 93k it had had enough.
Seems to be upto 07 from my (limited) research.

Be careful on the transit if having it long term is creeping up in your thoughts, i've just got rid of a 51 plate with more or less the same mileage....
Check the sills, chassis and wheel arch's.
The amount mine needed doing on it was scary (rust) which was a shame as mechanically it was quality and there was bary any sign of rust on the shell!!
I'd personally run your traffic to the ground if your intention is to buy another van in a year....£ 400 to 500 to get through an mot means you'll have a van for a year and gives you a chance to save up for a decent van....
(Incidentally if you buy a transit, get it up on a ramp and spray the underside with as much anti rust as you can)  ;D
