12v is your live feed from the van/starter battery.
IGN is the activate feed which is coupled into the ignition. It can also be coupled into a cable that is only live when the ignition key is in the 'on' position. The most usual connection is the second feed wire to the warning light from your alternator.
6 - to + of leisure battery
4 - always on
2 - second terminal which is only activated when engine is running.
o/v - earth (chassis)
The leisure battery also needs to be earthed to the chassis.
Some cigarette lighters sockets could be used but it has to satisfy the criteria. You may also find that the positive wire that feeds the radio could also meet the criteria.
When connected to the alternator you are assured that the connection between the 2 batteries (Van/starter and leisure) will only be made when the engine is running.
Personally, I would rather use an intelligent SCR that this much simpler to wire up; one wire from the van battery to the SCR, one to the battery and another from the SLR to earth. I see this same company also advertises an intelligent relay.

I'm not sure which other terminals are for what. One will be "always on". Another will only be on when the engine is running (fridge circuit in the caravan world) and there will be an earth as well.

could you link me a sensible priced one please spruce ;)

We have 2 of these fitted on seperate vans

which has all the kit for you to use.
The trouble with these older ignition activated relays is that the alternators on newer vehicles don't operate the same way as they did. Most newer vehicles, use what is known as a battery sensed alternator. If you connect your split charge relay to the charging circuit, you will notice that the charge light on your dash remains illuminated, the split charge relay will not energise. This is because the alternator uses the feed through the bulb on your dash to measure the battery voltage and adjust it’s output accordingly.
On older alternators, it was just an output that indicated whether the Alternator was charging or not.

Google "raw components", they are the very best you will find and come ready wired for the most simple installation possible.
Been banging on about them for years on here, but most people would rather spend hours messing about with gear because its cheap, rather than buy the right gear for the job, that takes minutes to install.

Their website is down at the moment. I think I once checked these out and they were really heavy duty.
I have the old type split charge relay on my Citroen Relay van linked to a 105 amp leisure battery. I also monitor the system with a volt and amp meter combo kit. I have never found the alternator charges the battery at anymore than 8/9 amps, although it may initially splike at 11/12 amps. So for me, having an 80/100 amp relay isn't necessay IMHO. My current setup was transferred from my previous Citroen Relay van, so has been in service about 5 years now.
I do know that a leisure battery will only accept a lower charge rate than a starter battery. If this was connected to a large starter battery that was flat, then my current relay probably wouldn't be man enough for the job.

I have just taken my relay out and see it's the same as Smithie posted.
So I have updated my first reply post.

Thanks Spruce. for the advice.

Has anyone install one of these relays for second battery and which wire goes where. All help needed. Thanks,
I've been using one of these for 3 years with no problems.
12v - van battery
0v - chassis
4 - second battery
Earth second battery
That's it!

We initially had 3 of them and one failed. I opened it and one of the strips on the pc board had burnt.
If I were to add a second battery I would either put it on a totally different SCR with a new power supply from the van battery or seriously consider Concepts heavy duty unit.
