I've recently set up a website through Wix and submitted it to Google, it is showing on page 2 for my main area that I work in which I guess is not bad seeing as I haven't done anything to try and get it high up yet, ideally want it on page 1 though as I doubt most people are going to bother looking at page 2.
Having read a few articles on Google about search engine optimization it seems that backlinks are very important as Google ranks sites higher if they have a lot of relevant backlinks, problem is I don't understand what backlinks are or how you go about getting or adding them to your website, anyone on here understand how this all works or got any tips for getting a higher Google rank?

Put links on Facebook, twitter, and any other social network you might use, it's also a good idea to have links from your site to Facebook etc. invite any friends to like your Facebook, and also create a Facebook page. Have a look at mine, it's only a basic site but it does the trick www.mrspot.co.uk
Cheers

Add your website to the footer on each of your posts on here.
Basically, a back link is any clickable link on any web page which will allow someone to travel from a web page to your website. At the bottom of this post are clickable links to my three websites. They are back links. :)

Backlinks from low quality sites, or sites completely unrelated to your site can actually damage your google ranking so don't just drop links everywhere,... social media is great for ranking & links in local business directories etc are good,.. but swapping links with a dog groomer in Oklahoma etc will not help your site!

But they won't do any good because this site is restricted to members only and Google can't follow them. ;)

True, but they bring in traffic and that helps.

The amount of people visiting a window cleaning site isn't going to affect that sites SEO noticeably. Google deals with sites that have thousands of visitors to sites on a daily basis. Two bods clicking on a link from here every now and then isn't going to make a great deal of difference.
It's your site relevance and wording used on the main page and tags that have the greatest influence IME.
