Title: Using domain names ?
Post by: Steve Chapman on July 30, 2013, 09:58:28 am
Hi all,

To the Internet experts  :)

I have quite a few domain names that I've never used but would like to make some use of, is there an effective way of linking them to my main website without having to do a new site for each name ?

I don't want to damage the ranking of my main site so only want to do it if its going to be effective all round.

I was thinking maybe having a landing page for each domain then linking all the other pages back to the main website ?

Would this work or be detrimental to the original site ?

Your suggestions would be appreciated ! :)

Regards
Steve

I presume that those domain names have no history i.e. new sites going on unused domains?

The lack of history, authority or "trust" means that the backlink may not be worth much (but better than nothing).

They would need to be on different "C class" IP addresses as well (not all based on the same server) to carry some weight.

I hope that helps a bit.

Ok thanks Gary,
Would those new domains rank at all being linked to the main site or be better off being used as completely new sites ?

Just to clarify, I already have the domain names, I just want to know how best to use them. Most are keyword rich ones so have to be useful in some way ?

The value would be the time and effort you put into them, they have little intrinsic SEO value which people seem to have a hard time accepting now.

The linking idea is a bit redundant as well, you might as well have separate pages on your main site.

An exception might be you have another business address in another area and want that site to be associated with that place, that is worth doing.

What with social media and all the other stuff google wants us to do, part of the trick is knowing where to focus your efforts rather than spreading them thin.

Steve

find a keyword that easy to rank for write a page for it, put on your url, then link back using that keyword to main site. how do you find that keyword? follow your site stats and they will tell you what other keywords your main site ranks well for. having a page of content that just has that subject on it should gives more page rank to your main page.

But you content on your main site need to be organised in silos.

these second sites can become silos for that keyword in their own right. for example i have done this with youtube videos they easily become the site for that subject as the only other place you could find such a concentrated collection would be youtube

It's a way of organising your site into relevant "chunks".

For example, all of your carpet stuff in one, all of your upholstery stuff in another. It helps navgation for both humans (better user experience) and spiders.
