Title: slate finish
Post by: gwrightson on July 22, 2013, 07:36:39 am
A customer has asked me if it is possible to apply a sealer/finish to her kitchen floor, these are slate , she is wanting more of a sheen on the slate tiles.

Is it possible ,is their a product that can be applied over the original sealer that will do this job ?

Sealers are designed to treat anything that lands on them as a contaminant and therefore by definition to repel so in order to answer your question I will need to know what was used as the original sealer?  Ideally when it was applied as well please!

Nice job but it looks awful to me!  It is so plastic looking!  What a way to screw up what is essentially a nice looking coloured slate ::)roll

Does it look good enough to apply a topical sealer straight on or does it need enhancing first?

Thats what the customer wanted. It was sealed with this when it was laid.

Kevin,

it does look in good condition, it is just she requires a higher sheen then she already has, the slates are predomitly black slate , so i am guess just a topical sealer .

What would you reccomend ,if this is the case ?

Just go straight on with Aqua Mix High Gloss Sealer 2 x coats or alternatively LTP Iron Wax Gloss both will give the desired result and both are fairly easy to strip at a later date.

Thanks for replys Kevin,

i have managed to souce ltp localy (tile giant )  as need urgently, i intend to clean the floors using a contra rotating brush , and then just so i have made sure of getting in all of the raised areas of slate a cimex with nylon brushes . I was going to use a strong detergent, but not so sure this is a good idea according to the data sheet. any suggestions !!
