Title: what van for £4000-£5000?
Post by: dazmond on July 12, 2013, 06:40:19 pm
im planning on getting a new van next year.the kangoo has been great for the last 3 and half years but its too small really for all my equipment and tank.ive outgrown it.

i was thinking of a ford transit connect 230 LWB but i still think it might be a tad small?

im looking at putting a 500L TANK in a cage in the back,4 poles, trad equipment, brushes etc

what vans have you guys got and how much did they cost you?i have 9 years NCD and a full clean licence.whats the commercial van insurance like on say a vivaro/renault trafic?

thanks in advance lads

very best wishes

Hi daz
I use a fiat scudo, for a one man band its perfect as has a 900 kg payload.  I have a 500 litre tank plus poles and trad gear, also a gutter vac and my pressure washer at times and still have room. Its small enough for easy parking too.

I paid £3000 two years ago and its on a 56 plate

Our Vivaro was £4k (no vat) 3 years ago, on a 06 plate. Has done nearly 120k now though so will need replacing soon, will probably go down the brand new route.

Great van, no complaints, it just sailed through its MOT! It did have a new gearbox 2 years ago at a cost of £900 though but that wouldn't deter me from buying another.

Insurance wise I now pay £62 per month for 2 of us (I've got 6 points and 4 years NCB). Last year our insurance was £125 per month.

650 litre tank fits in nicely and keeps the 2 of us working for 6+ hours (when I've sorted the leak on my reel)!

you ve got loads of mileage left in that van mate!my kangoo has done 140,000 and still going strong!!.....and its errr........13 years old!! ;D

i think your van looks great danny.mind you i only do around 3000 miles a year due to very compact work and having a car for evenings and weekends! ;D

Why spend so much for 3000 miles per annum?
I could understand it if you were doing the mileage.

Extreme 47
Extreme 25 (when it arrives!)
Slx 22

Unger trad pole

Hardly too many poles!just right for a sole trader id say! ;D

If I had a better van id probably take on work further afield if its a good paying job!!!

Low mileage equals less repair costs, less fuel used, more time cleaning windows than driving around. ;D.

If you sold your "sports car" that would be another £250 that you could add to the amount you want to pay  ;D

MWB high roof tranny, you can have a party in it !!! Can't fault it. Room for my 650 litre tankl, two reels laid out, ladders carried onboard loads of poles, trad gear racked out, chemical racks, cloth racks and a jet wash on board  ;D My mate runs three swb low roof ones, great for getting your kit in but a squeeze for anything other than that. Mercedes Vito looks a good one, just got one for a dedicated jet wash van, nice compact size for one operator.

I had to replace a bulb this year - must be a common fault with them.

ive spent 2 months looking for a transit and there is nothing out there fir the sort of money you are talking, even ex rac vans, the only ones they are selling at the moment are 57 reg, and one with 85k are up for well over 5K inc the vat.

maybe if you went to an auction and got an ex lease van  you might be lucky, but transits are very highly priced from traders a the moment.

Lee, I couldn't agree more. The stuff out there is mostly high priced rubbish.

I would wait a few months and see what the change of registration brings in Sept through to Nov. Ford seem to be running the Transit and the Custom side by side, as they haven't had any clearance sales to get rid of the old model. The Sept reg change was generally the motor industry's best time sales wise.

However, as this shortage of good used vans has been around for sometime, the March plate change didn't do much for the used market. There is plenty of good 1 year old 10k mileage vans at commercial dealers, but these tend to be more than us as the average window cleaner can afford.

Having been painted with the manufacturer's paint brush, I would never consider a van with 100k on the clock, and certainly wouldn't buy an AA or RAC van with 180k on the clock, no matter how well it was serviced and maintained. They got to be worn out at that mileage - if they weren't the RAC would still keep them.

I would never touch a red postoffice van either - they have all been abused by a multitude of drivers.

I still think the BT vans are good value for money, lower mileage and usually one dedicated driver who has responsibility of his van. The downside is that they are blue, although white ones are now finding there way into the system. Sadly, they also seem to be leasing their van now rather than buying them, so the leasing companies will be trying to retail them themselves rather than send them out to Auction.

at Colchester last week , ex enterprise vans were cheap  very clean and well nice  and whats wrong with an ex lease van ?? your  vans an ex lease , three of them rac things went pass not one went for over 2500 pounds

these loads going at haydock this week I know as I am looking for a transit sport ill be loging on to the watch while shopping thank god for the I phone  , guess you sat for months on ebay and traveling round dealers lisening to there bull poop , if you paid 5k for your transit he made over 2000 pounds wages on you bet he was a happy bloke

I didn't say there was anything wrong with ex lease, and yes mine is ex lease, but the average person looking for a van is going to look on eBay, or go yo traders, and in that case there is nothing out there for 5k
