I have been asked to clean Ronseal Decking Oil from concrete patio slabs. The owner had splashed it about when coating nearby decking. They tried white spirit which had no effect as it had been allowed to dry. Has anyone had to remove anything similar, and what gave the best results?
I would be grateful for any advice.
Kind regards.

Pre wet the concrete then apply Aqua Mix Sealing and Coating Remover, allow to dwell, then scrub with a soft to medium brush on a Mono Rotary machine then vac up with wet vac, rinse and vac again. Job Done!!!

Hi Kev, thank you for your advice.
I phoned Ronseal, who's adviser recommended Isoflex Clean It Up Fluid, but I think he just gave me a standard response to all Ronseal related spills. I will take your advice and use Aqua Mix Sealer Remover.
Kind regards,

You should always go with the Manufacturers advice really! I would also seek Roger Oakleys advice from R&A on this as well because it is his speciality area

Is it definitely oil & not stain? if it is oil you should be able to remove this with a hypo mix 1:1 20 mins dwell time, if it is a satin then you are going to need something else, can you post a photo of the Ronseal cr*p

Hi Roger, thanks for your reply. I believe it is a Stain rather than oil, but is sold as oil. Here the product sales info:
Ronseal Decking Oil - A protective, lightly tinted oil that enhances the natural colour of decking. Nourishes wood, replacing natural oils. It contains – Alpha 3 – benzotriazol, cebacate, colbalt/2 –Ethyhlhexanoate, ethyl methyl ketoxmine.
I will be tackling the job tomorrow so I will try different products to find the most effective.

It is one of Rons*its tinted oils, don't know if you would be able to get any in time, but either Pre-deck or Dilunett both from Owatrol from here http://www.owatroldirect.co.uk
Might be worth a call to them to see if they have any stockists in your area, if you can only get one product go for the Dilunett.

Roger,
Thank you for your help. Time is against me on this one – I will look to get some Owatrol for future jobs. But for now I will go with Isoflex Clean It Up Fluid initially, and then try Lithofin Wax Off which has had some good reviews, and seems similar to the products you advise.
I will post results if interested!

Andy,
What you are going to need is something with Sodium Hydroxide in it, this is the stripper part of these sort of cleaner/strippers, I don't know the Isoflex, but not the Lithofin product is the right one for this either. If you have access to Sodium Hydroxide (caustic soda) I can tell you how to make a mix up, but would rather explain over the phone then put on here as if it goes wrong you can hurt yourself and also do some damage to what you are cleaning.
Let me know by 06:30 tomorrow morning if you need to speak on the phone, as I'm heading into London and need to get some work done before this heat kicks in again.

Hi Roger, I will get some caustic soda early tomorrow morning. It seems a bit tricky to use so can I speak to you first?
If so, when would be convenient to call?
Or if you wish my number is 07806631474
Kind regards

I'll be on site by 08:00 tomorrow, give me a call on my mobile number 07785 377991, if it does go to voicemail leave a message and I'll get back to you with-in the hour I'll talk you through a mix you can make to remove this.
-
How did you get on Andy?
-
Hi Roger, thank you for the phone call and the advice yesterday.
Nitromors - Double strength Gel didn't touch it. Although dwell time was reduced because of the hot weather. I used their Gel product as I thought it would take longer to evaporate in the heat.
So it's Caustic Soda today.
I have told the client that this will be the last attempt at removal, so fingers crossed.
Kind regards

Hi Roger,
Just thought I'd let you know how I got on. 95% of the staining came out - leaving slight marks that can only be seen when looking hard for it. The customer was delighted with the results. It took several hours of, on hands a knees scrubbing but the results were worth the effort.
Dangerous stuff though! During the clean I must have adjusted my eye protection without thinking and touched my brow, resulting in a small burn that took a couple of days to heal. Lesson learnt!!
Anyway thank you again for your advice.
Regards
Andy

Andy,
I was only thinking about this today, Glad it worked, Ronseal can be a pain in the arse to remove, and the caustic is a good chemical but unstable when you mix, so sorry to hear you burnt yourself, I did say it is nasty to use, welcome to the caustic burns club :)

During a CIP we had a sight glass burst - the oppo left a valve closed and pressurised the carbonator, the caustic was over 70 degrees and he was not wearing his suit. The caustic killed the skin which needed skin grafts and over a year off work :'( nasty stuff !
