Title: Mitsubishi L200 Advice
Post by: telfordwindowclnr on July 08, 2013, 10:12:01 pm
Hi everyone. I may be taking a leap into the unknown on Saturday and buying the above. What sort of issues should I be looking out for when I view it on Saturday?

Thanks in advance.

Steve. :)

They are cracking little motors Steve.
My brother has one-he loves it!

Not to be ageist or anything but you may be able to tell a lot by the existing driver.
The L200's are work horses-designed for lugging stuff across fields.
They are not very fast (at all actually) but they will pull a jumbo up Everest.
So...perhaps the thing(s) look for are if its been thrashed around town.
Don't be scared of a few bumps and scrapes here & there.
If it starts from cold, doesn't smoke, both boxes work and the driver looks ok you should be fine.

It's been owned by a UK branch of a European plant hire specialist. Not mini diggers n stuff, but massive jcbs and the like. This has not hauled anything apart from the occasional generator. It's been used as a surveying car mainly.

Solent be any alarm bells ringing there should there? Does anyone know of common faults? Thanks again. :)

Excellent mark. What year is yours? This is a 54 plate.

The one thing to check for is any damage on the underside , Just incase they have hit anything on the underside .

I have known people have them for years and have no troubles at all , Check the alloys around the badge in the center as the paint can start blistering due to grit getting between badge and alloy .

I am on my second set in 3 yrs  , I have a custy who had a 56 plate  from new for 7 yrs and never had any trouble at all apart from the rear leaf springs needed replacing it is said that the rear springs can go prematurely if no weight has been in the back they do like to have weight in the back .

It is not a greatly expensive job if you go to the right place , Just check them out he had a peice of leaf spring missing unknown to him , The garage servicing it told him . Mike

Steve if it has a hardtop canopy on the back check the make if it is a Alpha you should be good as its the top dog .

With other models the seals can go and you end up with water getting . spares and  other 4x4 gear can be bought from www.formula4.co.uk      and  www.4x4at.com  they are the same company based in Lemming Bar North Yorkshire .

They are a top company really helpful and friendly . Mike

Do the poles fit ok in the back. What sort of load length are we talking?

A SLX will fit in the back of the load bed  with a canopy on .

Load bed length depends on model Google it instead of being lazy  ;D ;D . Mike

Check the ujs on the prop shafts they go if not greased!!! Do them every 4000 as well as track rod ends etc. over kill I no but can be a pain. My dad as one and when it hits wet grass when towing it just spins even in 4 wd. Plus they. Also they have fully s/oil in them which is pricey. One more thing leaf springs on the back (dads) had two in three years (not towing much weight).

I looked at all the models of pick up before I went on this one.

This is the Walkinshaw Performance, upgraded springs, leather monogrammed seats, twin exhaust (it gets a lot of attention because it is so loud), bluetooth, integrated sat nav, 20 inch wheels. I think it is based on the Barbarian.

You don't see them everywhere and with the 176BHP, for a heavy car it certainly shifts.

Bad points

Uncomfortable seats on a long journey.

Would I have another - absolutely ;D ;D ;D

Stephen - thanks

Mick it was bought as a works vehicle - it will be abused

The springs will go without weight been in the back on a regular basis that is trouble with people using them like cars unfortunately .

And dont put H/T tyres on either i put All Terrain tyres on mine , First off H/T's are crap for traction and they only last about 15,000 miles ,

My A/T's have done just over 20,000 and i can see them doing another 10-15,000 miles

Rob you should have had a colour matched tonneau cover , Cant upload pics but mine is a sports Tonneau cover , Cant upload pics but their is a pic of one on a L200 on the homepage of www.4x4at.com  .

Your truck looks good though,  Fully loaded a carry just over 500kg and it pulls away like their is no weight in the back . Mike

Mike

I had it about five months ago, from a dealer in Bristol. It had been used by a firm as a run around, motorway mileage.

There wasn't many around at the time, black one on Ebay and an automatic on a 59 plate - that was nice in silver.

Unfortunately I didn't have a choice on the cover. I did want the sports Tonneau cover but they are about 2 grand (or there abouts) and I don't want to pay that on top of the pick up.

If it's too big to go in the bed it goes in one of the vans.

Stephen

What colour?

The seats are crap on distance journeys, it's like they aren't long enough and there's definitely not enough depth in them.

I drove vans for twelve years so anything is an improvement on that but we were at Newmarket racecourse yesterday, in the Transit and we had a three hour drive and not uncomfortable at all, as opposed to a three hour drive back from london, the day before and numb a*ses all round

I tried to get some Walkinshaw mats - emailed them, they don't do them!

Rest of it is a car that just wants to go and is very nice to look at

Black the same as yours. This is my third one so used to the uncomfortableness! In fact they have got load better as the models improved - turning circle in the older style L200 is horrendous!

Think they had the mats when I got it but didn't order them at the time - think they were around £30 a pop! Bought heavy duty rubber ones as I know how stinking they get in the end.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I have been reading with interest. Can I fit a 600 litre tank with two reels in the back of a Warrior? That's what I need it to do. Cheers.  :)
