Started 2 weeks ago today. Been going ok, picking it up pretty well. Got text yesterday morning -
Hi, Hurt my leg Friday night. Been to hospital and nothing is broken but its very painful to walk. Will let you know when I can come back to work.
What would you do? Do I sack and start over again or give him the benefit of the doubt?
-
Ask for a letter from his doctor
-
It can happen Im off sick today myself just when the weather couldn't be better.
How did he work over the first two weeks if he grafted well then I would tend to believe him.
If it were to happen again say in a few weeks time then I would rethink his position.
-
A text says it all Liar if he cant ring you up and explain exactly what has happened then game over .
Sack him and move on . Mike
-
and i would in future ask him to RING and speak to you if he is off email not text - sometimes if someone is swinging the lead, its too easy just to text. If he has worked well in the two weeks, benefit of doubt, but give him a ring this morning, and see how he is feeling today? And ask him to PHONE you tomorrow before work to keep you in the picture (I would ask him to phone before work each day he is off) Obviously with an established employee with good track record, i would not ask them to call in everyday :)

good advice actually ;)
-
I would suggest a home visit under the guise of being a caring sharing employer. If he is swinging the lead you will know it and more importantly he will know you are not a mug to be ped around with. If he is genuinely ill then you can help him and be a top end bloke in his book. and he will work all the harder for you when he gets back..
Only get rid when you know he is taking teh p or is a poop worker..
-
Have a little bit more info now from someone who knows him. Apparently he had a few beers Friday evening, got home and realised he didn't have his key. Top window was open so tried to climb up and in. Didn't manage it (maybe due to the 7 pints he reportedly had in him) and one ambulance trip later he isn't fit for work.
-
Hat rack him instantly
-
Why would you automatically sack him... is he any good as a worker. Other than this instance is there anything else to his detriment... You could play this to your advantag if he was a keeper.. a bit of sympathy and support could make hime very loyal if he is a goodun.
If he is unwilling, slow with a poop attitude then get rid. If he has potential keep him..
If he does it again get rid.
-
Good to know he is not lying , You should have a chat with him about what you expect of him in certain circumstances and that been open and honest and communicating properly .
Will enable the both of you to earn the trust and respect of each other . Mike
-
Trust me i have empoyed many window cleaners and if he cant sring two weeks together he is no use.

In the two weeks he was spot on. On time or early every day, listened to what I told him and worked well. I'm inclined to give he a chance and see how he works out.
-
If he asks for sick pay tell him to go to dss to claim as u don't have to pay it

should have used wfp

must admit when I first read this sounded like a lame excuse what with happening on a Friday and the hot weather over the weekend and into this week, many will be pulling "sickies" today.
But its sounding now like its genuine excuse.
And from what you say about the previous two weeks sounds like he is worth keeping.

Called it.
10 things that make a good worker:
1 Comes into work on time every day.
2 Doesn't take days off.
3 Doesn't get 'ill'.
4 Doesn't get mondayitis
5 Comes into work everyday.
6 Doesn't take days off
7 Is not a skiver
8 Understands that you need him in EVERY DAY
9 Never misses a day.
10 Comes into work EVERY DAY.
Any issue you have with an employee (attitude, speed of work, customer relations etc) can be solved provided they come into work EVERY DAY.
It's window cleaning, you can teach any one to do it, provided they come into work EVERY DAY.
-
left leg or right leg? if you hav time sit in a car near his home ,see if he limps on the correct leg when he goes out his front door

Yeah, I seem to remember you mentioning it was quite important he turned in every day :)

Can't be bothered with that, falling out an upstairs window will take time to heal, I'm sure Ill see some signs if he comes back to work.
-
personally i would sack him right away.
he could take pain killers and come in. if it was obvious he was in bad pain you could send him home.
it's BS. if he really wanted the job he would be in trying to work thru it
-
If I had been in a new job 2 weeks and I fell out a window and got an owie on my leg I would hobble to work.

David i thought you where going down the franchise route and had at least one franchisee from what i can remember from here.
Whats made you employ someone again?

But you said sack him in your initial post.
-
So at the employment tribunal 'Why did you sack this fella?'
'Well, cos someone on the Internet, who i dont know and who admittedly has never met the fella said to. Yes, its true, quite honestly he could be an 11 year old troll who gets his kicks in life from talking giblets to total strangers. Now you put it like that I get your drift'.
Case closed.

You can't take an employer to an unfair dismissal tribunal if you have only worked somewhere for 2 weeks.
I get your point though. Other people cannot make this decision for you; they have never met this guy let alone know whether he is fit for the old heave ho.

8)
It's the principal.
People on here saying sack him. If an employer sacked someone because someone on the Internet told them to they really shouldn't be employing in the first case. In fact if thats the case breathing shouldn't really be privelige they're entitled too. :-)
-
Sack him mate, he's using you for the days he wants to work. Cherry picking. I have a lad who suffers with mondayitis!!!!, but according to the medical expert I get my advise off, mondayitis is very contagious, therefore a full week off to recover is required every time, and he does it coz he thinks he can get away with it, coz we so busy. But I would rather cut me nose off than give into him. His wages this week = £0.00 after tax.
Full week off last week and came in yesterday to find out his job is in the job Center, don't hold no hopes for anyone from jobby tho.
Experienced window cleaner required - Liverpool area
Best a luck mate

You have to be in a job 2 years now before you can go to a tribunal

I am going down the franchise route but was hoping to have a big chunk of the new work upfront rather than a mad scramble to pick up a couple of hundred customers in 3 months. The employee also gives me the extra capacity to keep picking up customers at a high rate all year round. With the franchisee I find they want work in spurts. When they have settled in after about 6 months they want about 60 more, then another 50 then 50 more at the year mark. I am up to my tits all the time so need help to take on a good number all year round.
-
With regard tho the guy on the sick I'm going to give him a chance. I know what he did was stupid but I do believe him with regard to what happened. He has a 2 mile walk to the tram to get in then I have him leafletting 2 days a week too. I can see how if he has hurt his legs he may not be up to that.
-
You have to be in a job 2 years now before you can go to a tribunal
Also by the end of this month claimants will have to pay to take an employer to a tribunal.

I bet you £1 that he has at least 5 days off work in the next 4 weeks.

You might be right but I hope not.
-
post up a foto of his eyes . if they are anywhere near half shut i know he will let you down
-
In my previous job, I had it in employee contracts,
Any reason why you can't come to work must be notifed by telephone by 8am that day.
We do not accept texts or emails.

It's going really well. First guy is full and giving me no problems. You don't make as much as you would make off an employee but then again you don't have to worry if he falls out his window tanked up one Friday evening.

*****update********
Guy was off for the full week, came back on the monday last week. Wanted to finish early on the tuesday and day off for moving on the wednesday. Worked ok other than that. Collected him this morning at 8.15, he was back home by 9.20 with 'bad tummy'.
So all in all in 4 1/2 weeks hes had one full week off, one day to move, one wanted to finish early and one more sick today.

I only put it up for you soapy. What's the secret?
-
I only put it up for you soapy. What's the secret?
There is no secret. If I had a formula for it I would have retired by now. I have just employed someone (starts on Monday) who had already been in my employment on 3 previous occasions. He is not perfect but he is a capable cleaner and will be good cover for the next few months.
Everybody tells you not to employ friends or family. I have employed pretty much all my friends at some point. They are by a long way my best workers and as long as you are straight up about everything there are rarely any problems that can't be sorted.
-
One thing that I do tell them on day one is that if they have any days off in their trial period (3 months) they will get sacked. I don't necessarily sack them, that is judged on merit but that is what I tell them.
We have 3 main rules which are drummed into new employees:
1. Don't steal from us
2. Don't lie to us
You can guess rule 3 ;D
-
i have employed many window cleaners (more than a 100) over the last 30 years and if they are taking days off in the first month they are never going to be any good for you, learn from my mistakes....
-
Poor cherub isnt well enough today either. Apparantly the tablets his gran brought round yesterday havent helped and hes going to get better ones today. He also knows its 'taking the p a bit'.

Throw him out of a bedroom window.

Just out of interest; when were you last off 'ill'?
Personally The last time I was too ill to work was February 2011. I was in hospital getting an operation on my 'window cleaners knee'.

i notice hes poppin pills , ah yes a medical angle is often used as an excuse ,the good ol I.B.S. malady excuse works like a charm as no boss like challenging a foul -bowel lingering lazy boy .
its all just a reason to lay in bed . as a rule theyre usually texting like a madman while apparently sick in bed

I think it's more than taking the p a bit. I honestly can't believe he still has a job with you. Reading from the first post I thought he deserved a chance but now for gods sake it's clear he is trouble. Dismiss him before it gets worse as he is becoming a drain - you are on here bothering about him when the focus should be on you and your business.
Cheers, Tom

I took one day off in 2009 due to bad flu and i felt a bit wrotten so i took friday off and paid my lad who worked for me for the day.
apart from that ive not had any other time off due to being ill since i started window cleaning 10 years ago

Just let him go. He wasn't bothered, just wanted to know when and where to get his money.

LOL .. what money i would have said ;D youve not been in!!
stick to franchising :-\

i could tell him where and when to get his money .... ask susan dean (first clean) im sure she woiuld tell him where and when to get his money quite similar to me

It's never nice no matter if it's the right decision or not. At least he took it on the chin I suppose.
-
It's not something I enjoyed. I've been made redundant the past and it wasn't fun and landed me in the crap. it's my first employee and I made mistakes but I will learn. I'm a very fair person. He worked monday and Tuesday so he will be paid for those days. I didn't want to sack him until I was sure he was a rum'un.
-
i have learnt 5 times and now work on my own with very little stress
-
hope you av an ad out for a secondary ?
it took me quite a few until i found decent workers, try school leavers is my tip

Have another lad lined up. Sharing him with a lad from this forum who can give him 3 days and I will give him 2. Hes already trained up and has been good for Tom so far.
