Maybe its a stoooopid question BUT....if you ask your accountant to do ten minutes work in between the usual once a year book keeping thing........should I expect to be charged for anything else I ask of him. Look like fill in a form that's required from my bank....... Ta for any input x

Do you charge for extra work when your customers ask?
If its a query that requires anything more than a simple answer like yes or no then I'd fully expect to pay for their time

I don't charge £400 for 3 hours work though. Some would say its his charges to be your accountant for that year. Not just for a couple of hours....
-
You mean your not earning 400 for 3 hours window cleaning...? What's wrong with you man .... ;D
What did you agree upon when taking on this accountant we had one that was around 450 per year but was always difficult to get hold of and then submitted accounts late resulting in a fine so we changed to some one who just happens to be a customer for around £350 all in who is worth every penny. Our books are presented complete ie all expenses and income totalled for each month receipts numbered and filed in order so all she has to do is quick check and advise on any other tax breaks/ claims we might get or stuff we can't claim for. We have consulted her on the future like going limited or how to employ with regard to tax and the dreaded vat all of the above were covered in the annual fee.
Do you think the extra work you require should be included in the normal fee or is this something unforeseen and extra to normal accounting work ?

Its a two sided sheet of A4 with a few boxes that need a few numbers in. That's all. Nothing was agreesw when I took him on, but he's a penny pinching sod.
-
Favours don't pay bills.

Pole 2 Pole,
If its only A4 paper with a few boxes that need numbers, why don't you learn how to put the numbers in the boxes pack in window cleaning and become an accountant yourself.
Then come back offering your services and see how many people will change over to you !!!!
It doesn't matter how much money or how much work you have, the simple and most important part of everything is = get a good accountant.
If nothing was agreed at the start that's your fault, simple as that.
-
Well that's told me.....
Thanks for the love.
-
Do you not know the numbers required ?
I would hope that the figures you require are on the accountants report

He had to do it. And document it. And sign it.....
Job done. 10 minutes work. £25. I can live with that.
I wasn't being tight or wanting a "favour" off of anyone. I'm long past living in that world.
It was just a genuine enquiry as to what to expect for your annual fees.

Generally you pay for just a tax return. If you are self employed and don't employ, £400 is quite expensive. Especially if you give your accountant well organised data to submit your return.
-
I just do what I am good at, and let my accountant sort his job out.
I pay him £220.00 per month, and he is worth every penny.
I had same accountant for 19 years who charged less, and was terrible, but that was my fault because I did nothing about it.
Been with this accountant now for past 18 months and he is bang on !

You employ don't you and are limited? That is going to cost a lot more. For a simple tax return, £400 seems a lot. I am guessing the OP provides sales figures and costs, if so it is just filling in a form. What can be claimed is mostly common sense so those that say the accountant saves them thousands are talking rubbish. Bbut things change. For example I bought a van last year and though I would have o write it off over a few years, but becase I wan't sure, I checked the HMRC website and I could just offset it in year 1.
All that said, if I employed I would probably use a book keeper. If I was limited I would use an accountant.

8weekly,
yes sorry, I do employ and I am limited.
-
We employ, and pay the same £220 pcm. But for that the a/c is ALWAYS available for me
-
For £2,640 a year you'd bloomin' wanna be able to talk to him at any time!
-
Darrens lane window cleaning,
I can talk with my accountant anytime on the phone, at his office, or home etc.
He is very good, something which I never had with the k--b I had for 19 years, which makes me a bigger k--b for staying with him.
I know its a lot, but as long as im getting good money it all good ;)

Wasn't having a go bud. I only paid £408 last year just seemed a lot of money. I don't employ, no VAT and not ltd though.
