Title: Price Tendering

I and a colleague have been given the opportunity to tender for cleaning student accomodation at a local campus. The campus is used for conference delegates during the summer holidays.
The accomodation consists of one room with seperate shower room with toilet (no bath).
In total there are 112 to clean in two and half days (form Sat noon to Monday pm inc. nights).
It's basic dusting, hoovering and cleaning internal windows, and a good clean of the bathroom.
Although we have our own ideas of timescales and number of staff required we do not want to make the mistake of under or over estimating on our first quote. I would appreciate any advice on how you far more experienced people would go about it.

Are there any beds to be made?

What about stairs and landings?

Ther are no beds to be made. The students must vacate and take away there possesions. Just the basic furniture left.

We do have stairs and stair wells to clean. Again mainly hoovering, wipind down the handrails and cleaning the skirtings.

The normal allowance for a 'Travel Inn' type hotel room is 20 mins (with bed changing) so I would guess 15 mins per room (inc. bathroom).

Can't comment on the stairs as I don't know how big they are.

The thing with this particular clean is it's not a regualar daily or weekly clean but more an annual clean. The students are responsible for there own room cleaning so obviously some are going to be in worse states than others. Especially the bathrooms! Would you still say fifteen to twenty minutes?

I didn't realsise they were annual cleans. i would allow much more than 15 - 20 mins. More like 45.

we supply staff to a couple of company's
in the midlands that clean student flats they have 600+ flats to clean in 6 weeks and they have to be cleaned to a very high standard and take a lot more than 15/20 mines.

you may find that they have workmen in as well so you have to do some re-cleaning.

     in the past we have done this type of cleaning for universities and you will find bags and bags of rubbish to be removed before cleaning can start you will also find bathrooms alone can take twenty minutes as some of the students leave the shower glass disgusting . have you taken into account any shared kichens to clean these alone can take 2 cleaners acouple of hours . good luck

we have done student digs before...and never had a straight forward one to do :P, i would put in between 1-2 man/woman hours per job.

We currently do the communal areas & kitchen & lounge floors in 2 blocks of student accomodation on a weekly basis.

I was just down there last week because they were doing some filming & wanted the place sparkling but I don't know why because the kitchen worktops were absolutely filthy. They had removed the pots & pans and bags of food that are usually lying around  so all the splashes and stains were very visible.

That prompted me to try and estimate how long it would take to clean the kitchen at the end of the year - one has four sinks and 4 cookers and lots and lots of cupboards alone. I normally allow about 4 hours for a domestic kitchen on a spring clean so on that basis alone we would be looking at 16 hours alone for the kitchen!

Didn't even contemplate the bedrooms / bathrooms. One block has shared facilities and one has slef contained units. Plus there are another 2 blocks that we don't do on a weekly basis but would expect to get the end of year clean on.

looks like we will be busy.

On the bathroom cleaning, i.e. shower, sink, toilet and tiled walls, could anyone recommend a good cleaning product and a supplier. There seems to be a lot to choose from!

Yes Oven Cleaning. Thought I'd look in to other areas of cleaning and hopefully get some help from a Cleaning Forum.
You got a problem with that?

Apologies if I misinterpreted CMS's reply but the way he posted his reply it appeared he had a problem of me asking particular questions.
The whole point of me coming on to this forum is to try and learn from you established professionals about certain aspects of the cleaning business. Also being in the oven cleaning business maybe I can help others.
If these type of questions are not permitted on this forum please tell me and I'll stop.

DPG.....Regarding your question about the bathroom area and the required products etc to clean them, you probably only need a couple of multipurpose items.....but it is down to personal preference:

Multi purpose cleaner
Toilet Cleaner - for the toilet and limescale around the shower
Cream cleaner
Sponge with scourer
Toilet brush
Microfibre cloths (or even scrims to buff up)
It is a given about vacuums, gloves, mops, mop buckets, dustpan and brush etc etc

No doubt someone will pick up on an item i have forgotten, but hope the above gives you a rough idea, all you can get from your local cleaning supplier.

the student flats we do they have to clean 4 flats a day
they work 7 hours.
thats a team of two put you have to lift cookers out and clean behind and beds and other items have to be cleaned behind.

some flats are for 4 people some are 6.

The term student "digs" is accurate.

You need a garden spade to dig through the rubbish left behind.

Or maybe students have changed since I was 18  ;D ;D

I wouldn't put in a firm price until I had seen the state of the flats...... failing that, you have to err on the side of caution. There is no point putting in a low quote, getting the work and then paying your staff more than the client is paying you :-[
