Long story short, my step dad has been made redundant and didnt get the greatest of packages in return and being as there are no jobs out there him and my mum asked me to help get him a start in the window cleaning game.
The point in this post is that im going to see how quick a full round can be built by using myself and 2 other canvassers. Goingto be out 3 evenings a week from 5.30 to 8. Need a 2k a month round for him to match he's previous earnings so roughly 200 customers in all.
Hopefully it will spark others who need extra work to go out and bang the doors too. First night canvassing is tonight, will post results as they come in at the bottom of my profile like before.
-
Where you got to do that mick is it dartford Good luck !
I'm going to crack on with it in july once the wife finishes work ;D

Cheers paul, Yes between eltham and gravesend he wants with main base area being dartford. I feel the pressure on this 1 as its for family and needs doing quick.
I havnt failed to deliver before so with luck on my side all will fit into place nicely.
jusly is only a few days away lol... You best get crackin on with it mate.
-
Is your step dad not canvassing with you? Or ar you building the round to sell him?
-
I will get him canvassing too in time after i have built a big bulk up, no not charging him, im doing it all for free, Even paying the canvassers out my own pocket. He supports my little sister and my mum so i wouldnt want to take any money that puts food on there table. Besides i like a challange and a challange to keep my family going well with no money worries is 1 ill happily take on.
It will be he's round to take 100% of the money from it each month, i wont take a penny. The round will belong to me so if he ever did decide its not for him or retires then i have a full round to play with and employ etc. long term its a no lose business gamble, for the time before then its keeping my family above water.
-
A good help your being there fair play to you, but wouldn't it be better first to take him out with you for a month or so to see if he can hack it first
-
Good on you ;D
-

He has done a few bits and bobs before with me so will hack it especially with a light slx22 pole and a fixed hose reel in the van there isnt any if's about it in this situation, without it he would be up poo street with worry and debts building up.
-
as he ever cleaned a window before?whichever way you look at it window cleaning day in/day out is hard work whether your wfp or trad.also he ll be very slow at first.
fair play to you mick.hope it works out.
best wishes

-
Nice one Mick, hope it goes well and keep us informed.
-
Not to great of start tonight 5 customers between 2 of us, Sidcup is 1 tough area so wont be rushing back there again!.
Still £82 closer to the target needed.3 £20 houses 1 £12 bungalow and 1 £10 front 4 weekly.
Back out again saturday late morning for a few hours.
-
At that rate you'll hit your target in 8 weeks, not bad going in my opinion.
-
Well done mick ;)

You need to force yourself out mate.. Those customers wont come to you. Eye of the tiger..
Why not do the sale and sold boards, thats a much more fun way of doing it where you can pick and choose the customers so to speak, just wait for the new owners to get in there house and knock saying you have noticed they have just moved in and that you already do many in the road( they dont know or care if you do others in the road but it makes them fel at ease and its a good conversation starter). They will jump at the chance of you doing them as they will want to show there new house off to family and friends all sparkling and clean. My retention rate is so high doing this, the main no's are when they carry on there old cleaner or your too late and they have already called 1 from yell etc.
Go out 2moz eve and jot down all the sale and sold boards in the best local area that you do, follow them up every 2 weeks to see when for sale turns to sold so you can cross them off. Soon as that sold board disapears hey presto go and knock and do your stuff.
How i have my chart and play the game is using percentage on each wether i get the customer or not. Most will decide to become a customer.
For sale. Sold. Canvass.
25%. 50%. 100%
Soon as for sale turns to sold mark the address under 50% there. Then as sold sign goes mark it as 100% ready to canvass.
It realy works well and after a few months in on doing it the customers fly in. Some months i got upto 20 new decent targeted customers doing this method.

I do something similar to this but I keep an eye on the estate agents websites once the listing has gone off their site it generally means keys have been exchanged.
-
I do that as well but the best way is to be out there doing it so can be ready to go and knock there and then and also get a better coverage of whats going on to familiarise yourself with the houses your aiming for..
I find zoopla good for saying what houses in built up areas have been sold recently.

some good outside the box ideas there m8.
well done for getting out and helping someone with less than you out, they say though m8 if you contribute and give someone with less . you will recieve more.
maybe not from the person you are giving to , but it will come back in abundance.
1 week and im back out canvassing fulltime.

No probs gb. It also keeps me going the fact that others take on the advice to help thereselfs.
to be honest its more having it in yourself to get out to canvas/round build when your out its easy as you are in the zone..
Went out last night in gravesend and picked up 10, 3 were 8 weekly but still a customer is a customer!.
-
Now on 22 customers for £242 in 3 canvassing sessions. 2 of the canvassing sessions i was by myself. Hitting it again tonight and 2moz. Hoping to be at the 50 customers mark(£500 of work) by end of the this week sunday so can get him out starting to do first cleans with me the week after.
Also i have him out today making note of as many sale/sold boards as he can in the nicer areas with big £20plus houses to put on the round. Hopefully he will have a massive chart setup that he can work on over the next 6 months to boost him up when upto speed to want more than 10 jobs a day.
Has anybody else been out yet hittingnthe doors.
-
Just over 10% there that's not bad.
I'm expanding nicely too but I've lost count of first cleans. I had 123 last month which was a headache. You know I love canvassing but between two of us we are gaining that much work I've been struggling to keep up with the rest of the round so we are having half a week off canvassing to rebalance the work.
Are you out again tonight?
-
No im going out 2moz. Got my daughter tonight. Got 5 of us out 2moz(training 2 new girls up) hopefully they will be good and stick at it.
Its amaizing how quick work comes in when you chase it.

I know when you consider your average over a week and times it by 52 the numbers make you feel like you've been lazy but I would struggle to take on new work every week. The biggest hurdle for me is training new cleaners
-
cheeses me off soon there will be more window cleaners than customers
-
A brilliant night tonight. Did an area near me as had to train 2 new canvassers up and got 38 new customers for £466 between 5 of us even though 1 of the new canvassers got zero! Near enough a weeks work we gained in an evening(2.5 hours). Quite a few of the new customers were where they wasnt happy with there current cleaner who isnt reliable or regular and doesnt do the frames so they happily swapped over to us without to much persuading.. Happy days, also we did a new build where we picked up 11 of the chstomers so im expecting a few probs there in near future but im not complaining after a fantastic knock like tonight. Bring on the next one!.
-
ffiinggg hell.
i need some tuition m8
i really need to get some door knockers, how do u go about getting them mick ?
-
Brilliant well done Mick, inspirational stuff ;D
-
Cheers lads.
Well this time for my step dad i simply wrote as my facebook status canvassers always wanted to help build window cleaning rounds up and had 7 different people message me interested in doing it, normally i find them on gumtree or through my canvassing background of friends/ex coleagues. also while im out canvassing if they say cant afford a window cleaner as out of work i always offer them some canvassing.
Just dont be too fussy with who you have canvassing, some i have used over the years look trampy old rugged, drinkers etc however they always seem to deliver the sweets when they know they can earn an easy pound note. Never found a canvasser who consistantly is unable to bring work in after being trained up.

Mick, I've enjoyed reading your post; you're a smart bloke. Respect.

What a day 20 first cleans done and dusted and picked up 4 new ones whilst working most paid and were happy as larry so a touch there with no cancelations. My stepdad came out with me half the day to give me a hand and learn the ropes a bit better, he was slow but as he only wants 10 jobs a day he will be fine untill he speeds up. Im out again 2moz on the doors with 2 other canvassers and him so he can get out and learn how to doorknock. Hopefully get a good result.

Tough night tonight, 2 of us out only got 6 jobs and 3 were 8weekly. 4x£10 2x15.
Everyone was out which made it very hard,,, bloody sun!.
Still another step closer.
-
cheeses me off soon there will be more window cleaners than customers
think you may be right
-
He went out and did a collect last night as £288 had built up for the days he has done everyone he collected from here as happy as larry and said"see you next month".
Success!! Apart from the odd 1 off on the round every customer is fine and i think the fact that the pitch stating trying to build him a round up as has been made redundant realy hits a nerv with customers which has a positive effect with building a customer relationship as they are doing there bit to help him and he is doing he's bit to help them! A happy positive business circle being built and maintained, he even managed to get got 2 word of mouth customers already.
Living proof that there is loads of work out there if you go and find it and with the right approach business can boom and go from strengh to strengh. All this in under a month... Get in.
-
Hey Mick that's impressive work.
Just did my first day canvassing today hoping to emulate your work in 4 weeks.
Your posts are an inspiration, keep em coming please

Cheers colin. Im glad someone can learn and get motivated from me.

Mick can I just say well done and like others I have found the post very interesting.
Can I just ask a quick question?
When you have others out canvassing for you how do you pay them? Is it a fixed rate for each job picked up or do you pay them after a first clean? This option may be a good one for us as we need more work but also have other jobs. Hoping to go full time at the window cleaning once we have enough work. Sooner rather than later hopefully.
:)
-
Hi paul. When they canvass for me i pay them £5 per new customer as i have done a lot of the research and made notes of the houses that will have a better chance of getting etc. i pay them on the day usualy which helps keep them motivated. I dont ask them to replace any dropouts as normally they are realy good and at a minimum.. When canvassing for others i pay them a clean and a bonus if all there work sticks after the first cleans if any drop out they lose there bonus and have to replace the dropout on my round whilst id refund the cleaner we work for etc etc.
Best baving a team of canvassers as oposed to just 1 so they stick with it together and stay motivated.
-
5hrs canvassing for me over the last two days = £103 per month ;) all booked on one day
Out for more tomorrow
-
I love reading posts like this im making myself go and book an holiday
To motivate me to gain at least an extra £1000 per 4 weeks
Just gives me a kick up the arse .

Well there you go!
Do that for just a month(4 weekends) and you have yourself an extra 5k a year.
-
good work just wish I could do it hubbys no good looks like a debt collector ;D
-
Not done any for the last week where had been doing many first cleans and sorting my own rounds into order but today we went out (3 of us)and gained 12 jobs, 5 were £20 1 was £30 and the other 6 were £10 fronts.
This round is coming together fast and strong, we are explaining to the new customers how my stepdad had been made redundant and desperate to get back out there working and still havnt lost 1, had a few go over to 8 weekly but am shocked that retention is so far 100 percent.
Just goes to show that planning and targetting the right areas you get to keep all the sweets!.
Now over half way complete.
-
Brilliant mick. very well done so far. i will be updating my own progress shortly.
-
thanks mick ur posts provide great motivation and self belief.
i canvassed last nite for an hr = 4 custies and tonight for lil over an hour and 3 custies
looking forward to ur continued success with ur own round and hearing bout it :)
cheers

@ Mick Kent...
Mick i'm interested... You seem to get alot of monthly work as opposed to bi monthly work. So do you offer only monthly at the door when canvassing and only give them bi monthly on request? I'm only getting bi monthly laterly due to the fact i offer both frequncy's
Thanks
George

i get them to choose from a tick list rarely get 8 weekly i get mostly if cleaner does a good job they will be happy to stay as a customer however the way i talk them round i always talk 4 weekly terms so they assume thats the way to do it so who am i to argue.
4 weekly work is best for me.

Yeah i feel that these live updates are gonna be a good way to keep me motivated. I think its just what ive been looking for and need infact thinking about it sat here now!
As its hard to stay motivated when you work on your own and plus i'm sinlge so there is not too mush motivation for me as of late at all.
Thanks

4 weekly work is best for me.
Hmmm, very interesting technique for mick! As of about this time last year i took tosh's advice (amongst a few others also) to try and get the custyd to go 8 weekly so that, A) Customer retention is better. And, B) I can add 25% increase on the price for not too mush more effort to clean.
But after reading you post's i may have to rethink my sales pitch and start talking in 4 weekly terms and only if they refuse to become a 4 weekly custy offer the 8 weekly option!?
I'll have to give this some more thought over the next few days though!
Cheers mate
-
its all how you sell it to the customers george! 8 weekly means you need double the work and risk telling them a higher price than they have heard before for there windows, i know in the long run its cheaper for them but all the customer sees is £15 instead of £10. Thats my view on the charging more for 8 weekly etc. i believe if you price right for 4 weekly work then your onto a winner! anyway a £15 8 weekly job only works out £7 4 weekly! So if anything your best off charging £10 4 weekly and need minimal customers for a full business of customers. Also round my way 4 weekly seems to be the norm.
-
Just got off the phone to my mum! She has been going out with him cleaning and has been loving it.. What made me laugh was when she said she is polishing the letter boxes. Nowonder there retention is so high they are being verey thorough with there work and being a husband and wife team people seem respect them.

Yeah thats's the big problem mick isn't it... You need double the amount of custys to fill the books. So just to clarify, Do you only give them 8 weekly cleans if they specificity ask if you provide 8 weekly frequency's?

You need near double the amount of customers if 8weekly against 4 weekly as can only charge upto 50 percent more.
Like i said id charge £10 4 weekly where joe bloggs would charge £15. Over a year id get £120 for that customer and joe would get £90. Only downside is that joe cleans them 6 times a year but the flip is joe need a lot more regular customers and also needs to spend more time on the cleans as will get more dirty frames and glass against me who is doing easy regular maintanence cleans.
I except 8 weekly if thats what they want but i wouldnt go out my way to build a whole 8 weekly round.
If you had 400 4 weekly customers at £10 it will be 4k a month
You would need 600 8 weekly customers to earn the same 4k a month
At 8 weekly you do 100 less cleans each 4 weeks but have to be more thorough where they will have double the dirt and grime on top of needing to find 200 extra customers.
Overall 4 or 8 balance out well i just prefere the eas of 4 weekly repeat work.

thanks for that mike. Ive leaned a lot from you in a short amount of time! To be honest i have been trying to persuade custys to go 8 weekly when i could have got them on 4 weekly if i wanted, im sure. I especially suggest 8 weekly if they dont A) live on a main road. B) Live near a dusty field. or C) live near big tree's. I got those ideas from someone off here!

Hi Mick,
good to hear it is going so well for you. I have a couple of boys door knocking for my wheelie bin service as well as doing windows.
We find that there are three answers when we ask the question, " Do you have a window cleaner".
1. Yes we do. - No worries, give them a leaflet just in case they change their mind
2. No - but we don't want one.
3. No - What do you offer.
Converting the answer number 3 is doable most of the time as we are pretty cheap. Number 1, we cant do much.
It is the number 2 answer that we find we can't convert at all. Does your canvassing method enable you to convert those ones, or is it really the answer number 3 that you look for? I know with the bins if they DIY then we can't convert any of them so it's no point even bothering. Is it the same with those that give an outright no I don't want/need one, even if there windows are filthy?
Any help appreciated as wanting to get better results from my boys on the doors.
Regards, Neil

If you are round building for others 4 weekly is the way to go. If you are round building for just you then 8 weekly at a 50% increase is far better. It will take you longer to be full but when u are you will earn a good deal more. An 8 weekly takes no more time than a 4 weekly.

Hi Mick,
Great tread here , it's the mojo i have been looking for, herself has been chewing my ear lately..
I gotta take my hat of to you , respect !
Just a couple of questions ..1. What are the prime evenings and times to go knocking on doors for the optimum positive results ? 2. What is your intro and pitch ?
Peter

Cheers mate.
5.30/6 till 8 are the best times when most folk are in, i have so many pitches as it depends who i speak to, however 1 that is working a treat at the mo is saying im building my stepdad a round up as he has been made redundant, many people respect me for canvassing there house for him and want to be part of the round.
Maybe worth telling a little white lie to the, peter?.
