Hi Guys,
Just looking for some feedback !! I have been looking at having a "proper" website done as need to start picking up some business this way. I have been quoted £799 for a full CMS site with a mobile add on. Anyone any thoughts on the cost ?? seems high to me but i am not very up on these things. Thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply
Cheers

Depends on what you have asked for web design can be a minefield thats why after having a one page site done for £395 i decided to do my own wordpress site that costs me £8 per month hosting.
If you can do it yourself do so a have lots of freedom with my site and i can change anything i want
Some cms only let you add or remove text not add or remove pages
Below is a pic of my old site that cost £395 the site i have now is loads better and gets me more work ;) ;)

Ask how many website they have done are on page 1 of google, anyone can talk the talk but what we want is 1st page of google
This is my mate, he has more websites on the first page of google for multiple trades than anyone else I've heard of

Ron,
How much were you looking at spending for a website?
Also... It's all very well having a website - But it needs to be found by potential customers to!

Andy,
Hadn't got a budget as such, just best value !! lol just thought £800 was a bit high with SEO costs on top of that. I guess probably £500 tops

What do you do? (Sounds a daft question). What do you want to rank for on google?
Spending massive amounts on seo is not always necessary if you are not competing in a competitive market, EG:.'house cleaners in the highlands' or 'drive cleaners in Falkirk' might not be popular search Terms ' Glasgow carpet cleaners' might need a bit of money spent on seo to rank.
Put the search terms you want into google and see what is listed, if the first page is full of directories and not actual companies then you might have a chance

Hi Mike,
We are in a very competitive market. Do contract cleaning of all sorts anywhere in Scotland, primarily the central belt (Glasgow across to Edinburgh). Want to get up in the listings so we are seen as people generally only call the first one or two listings on page 1 of google & these days i think it is essential to have a mobile optimized site

Use Wordpress. Write the content yourself but invest in a custom made theme for it.
-
Hi Andy, thanks for the reply. Please excuse my ignorance but what is "Wordpress". As you can no doubt see I can use a pc but am not that savvy on the technicalities of it all !!!

Wordpress is a CMS or content management system. It is, in my opinion the best CMS there is. Get yourself a free one on Wordpress.com play with it, learn it. It's not hard. When you have mastered it get yourself some web hosting, I used 5quid host, get yourself a custom made theme and bobs your uncle you have a website. Write pages as easy as writing a post on here.
It's just the setup that's hard but once your past that your ok. Even the setup can be made easy by using a web host that uses 'CPanel' and 'fantastico'. Then it's a one click Wordpress install.

Wordpress.org is the one you want.
wordpress.com you cant use plugins or customize it nearly as much as you can with wordpress. I built mine myself with wordpress.org and make any changes i need within minutes.
you can learn all you need to know from Google & forums. Takes a bit of reading and trial & error but its worth it. i pay £35 per year for hosting and £5 every two years for domain names.

Thanks for all the replies. Think this will be worth looking at but will a self made site get anywhere in the rankings against professionally made sites with SEO or can I still get the SEO done by a company with my own site ??
-
my site ranks well, and i do all my own SEO. Im sure it could probably rank better, and i dont keep up on all the changes google makes, but its on the first page, and the places ranks high..
-
Hi Matt, thanks for the info. Without seeming to be to nosey, how many job opportunities do you get from your site per month ??
-
99% of my work comes in from the website and we are quite busy at the moment. Plus, companies like Balfour Beatty etc have found me through my website, so i must be doing something right.
As i said before, The SEO could probably be better, im no expert, but i have spent a lot of time reading up on things, and making small tweaks here and there and it seems to be doing well, and atleast im not having to spend huge amounts of my profit on SEO.
Some on here spend money on SEO and they see large returns, so it does work if you get the right company to do it, but right at this point in time, im happy enough to do it myself. Maybe in a years time, ill re think it and maybe go for a trusted company (one that others on here use and have proved work)
