This is what I plan to send out. I'll put business cards in the envelopes and possibly a flyer too.
Any comments welcome. I plan to send to nearly 1,000 local firms so getting it right would be good ;D
Many thanks for any input

And please note - the adverts at the bottom of that link have nothing to do with me!!!

It's a letter.
Did you want to send them a letter or a marketing mailshot to try and get some business, if you want to get some work then scrap it and write a sales letter
You need to create a sales presentation in written form, it needs excitement, suspense, a surprise ending, a big opening, a love scene in the rain.
That's quite a lot to think about so I would start with a great headline, something to grab thier attention.

Are your carpets costing your business money??
-
It reminds me of a 1950 style letter.
Have you studied Direct Mail Letter Writing
Look on Amazon for some good books on Direct Mail Letter Writing , stamps cost are high these days.
In not sure where my copy is but a place to start is Dan Kennedy Letter Writing
Or one I have on my desk
How to out market out promote out advertise everyone else you compete against. Paul Gorman
Both might be considered to be 1990s style
-
The headline I wrote there came from Dan Kennedy ;D ;D
-
Thank you people. Obviously this requires work and research, so that's what I'll get on with.
-
Some good posts for you to take on board there and as well as your letter you need to think about who you are going to target. Targeting a 1000 businesses within a certain range my not be your best bet as your message will be too general.
You also would want to think in terms of a series of letters rather than a s hit or bust effort.

I think the headline needs to fit recipient, and the best headline has a connection to the reader.
So if I was sending a letter to carpet cleaners to sell marketing letter templates I would use the headline....
"Heritage cleaners made an extra £1500 last week...... Do you want to know how?"
Then tell them how my sales letters worked so well they got an extra £1500 in business from just one mail-shot.
People relate better to what they know so will respond better to this approach, so send a letter to hotels with a headline like this ....
"Only 3 hotels in Swindon know this odour removal secret... Are you one of them?"
Everyone what's to know a secret ;) do you think a hotel owner would read that headline and not continue reading?

"Why 99 out of a 100 carpet cleaning adverts are doomed to failure"
-
The ultimate sales letter by Dan Kennedy was recommended by someone on here.
Think I only paid about £7 for it off amazon, well worth a read.

Did Dan Kennedy and Joe Polish etc make more money running their first businesses or later by selling 'marketing secrets' to businesses?
I wonder if their strategies are so amazing why they just dont start up a business and actually profit from them or is it a case of there's a lot more businesses owners out there willing to pay money for a book that promises the earth on the front cover but whats on the inner pages is irrelevant?
Save your money and knock on the 1000 doors.

Dan Kennedy has made millions for businesses in a whole range of sectors. His advice is sound and still works today despite the rising costs involved. You could knock on doors but next month what you going to do, knock on another thousand doors afer a days work? Kennedy teaches you how to work a repeatable system that gets better results over time.

For the cost of sending a 1000 letters could you employ a tele-sales girl to phone business ?
I think The cost of stamps is killing direct mail
-
Now you've got something there Mike. 1,000 stamps is £500 - or 50 hours at £10 an hour.
I'm on a phone deal with Orange for unlimited land line calls.

Just be aware firms can be a lot snottier and more likely to report you if they are registered with TPS when you call, whereas your 'junk mail' goes in the bin. Strictly speaking you should add in the cost of buying a vetted database listing of non TPS registered companies.
What you learn from the Dan Kennedy process can also be applied to email autoresponder sequences and indeed marketing calls to companies too, but with a higher chance of success.
A letter sequence may cost a fair bit but how much is a commercial client worth over the long haul?
-
A bit cheaper at .42p per letter, but that's all in, letter, envelope, printing and posting.

I agree doc mail is the best , then get someone from people per hour.com to design a card , or write a great letter for 50 quid and away you go
