Title: product for cleaning shower enclosure?
Post by: MrsMeredith on February 27, 2006, 07:34:43 am
Hi everyone!

I'm sure this has been asked before, so apologies if I am raking up old mud!, but has anyone ever come across a product which is capable of making a shower door/screen in a shower enclosure completely spot free and clean?

Thanks in advance

Tracey.

How bad is the screen you have in mind?

In the past i have used a toilet cleaner which gets rid of most of any limescale, or if really bad, a good limescale remover - can't chuffing think of its name now!!  :P

Then i finish off usung our window cleaning gear to get a smear free finish. Finishing with the blue micrifibre cloth for glass can give a smear free finish too.

Kind Regards

Tim

Hi Tracy

I find Harpic good for removing limescale but to be used with care (can damage the chrome) and finish off as Tim suggests.

I use this product and system for shower screens, if the screen has a lot of lime scale (water drops) on it I use Lifeguard LIME SCALE remover for all washroom surfaces. A small amount with water on a non scratch greeny rub on all over remove with a squeegee (window rubber) finish of with kitchen role. Works every time. Its ok on chrome but never mix with bleach, like all lime scale removing products, mix with bleach and you get chlorine gas and in a tight space it’s bad, really bad!
The product above is by "Johnson" I buy it from Bunzle in cases of 24, works out at about £3.20 for 1L so it is expensive but well worth it and use it liberally. Hope this helps, Phil

W5 limescale remover from lidl 99p.

We've tried all of the above and a few more aswell, they all work, but IMO W5 is as good as any and better than most.

I would be very careful on the use of the green scourers.....however, thinking back to cleaning shower door screens, its not made of glass as such, is it? Some very thick plastic sheet type composition which shouldn't scratch very easily.

hi, new to this site (terrific isn't it!) so forgive me if I stumble on the way! I find Mr Muscle shower cleaner pretty good, but always buff with a microfibre cloth after (Swear by microfibre cloths for giving things the finishing touch!) Also agree with the Lidl 99p.
Happy buffing!!!! Juliet :)

STC toilet & washroom cleaner and a WHITE scotchbrite. Will clean the plastic too and is chrome safe. Nothing to touch it in my experience.

A product called Citrus.  It removes limescale and polishes up nice with a piece of microfibre.  I use it for all shower doors.  Otherwise Highphos from Evans is good.

Hi all. There is a topic about this further down from earlier in the week which i replied to.

shower doors i just love them,i cant believe all the different things poeple are using.

I simply use neat fairy liquid on a very wet cloth then either rinse with water and leave to dry or use a sqwidgey thats what i call it,the impliment the window cleaners use with the rubber blade use in a figure of 8 from top to bottom this gives a dry clean look and sparkly much better on glass shower doors than plastic, fairy also is the best for removing the scum some baths have from where the level of the water has been especially when people have used bath oil and bath bombs etc.then go over it with a nice smelling disinfectant for the perfect finish .

As for polishing and rubbing down shower doors  noo noo noo! try it and see let me know how you get on.

suzieq,
looks like you don't live in an area with any limescale!! Move to London and try that method.

Highphos from Evans is great.

We have recently cleaned quite a bad shower screen and simply used a steam cleaner! Worked a treat.

Hi,

As limescale is mainly calcium carbonate and magnesium, all you need is somthing with acidity to breakdown the compound.

Therefore, the simple use of distilled vinegar is ample.

For shower doors, and general cleaning we use a ratio on 10 parts water/1 part vinegar with a splash of lemon juice.

For heavy duty use, use a 50/50 dilution.  Obvioulsy, it comes with a tad of elbow grease. ;D

For shower heads, try saturating a jeye cloth with vinegar and simply wrap it around the shower head, allow some dwell time (the longer the better) and you will be amazed at how well this works.

As for cost comparison shall we say with the 99p lidl W5 (which I have tried) it works out for the 10/1 ratio 0.03p for a 1 litre spray bottle ;)  (also excellent on glass/doors/windows.

We also use it for wood furniture with excellent results, you simply mix the distilled vinegar equal parts with lindseed oil.

Hope this helps.

Paul
