Title: TDS Help please
Post by: mark mids on June 11, 2013, 06:35:42 pm
Hi Guys

Thursday I brought a di vessel because my water had gone up to 18tds after my merlin, after fitting it, it came down to 0001 which im happy to work with so all was well.
No work was done Friday to Monday as I went on a short break with the mrs.
tonight I started to fill the tank and the reading was 0014 ???
I tested the RO and that was coming off at 0018.and 0014 after the di vessel.
It was a new vessel and I saw him fill it up with resin!! surly resin should last longer as I have only filled 350 ltrs with it so far?

Cheers for reading guys.

Your resin may draw impurities from the inside of vessels etc. when they are new. The first batch of resin never lasts as long as the following batches. Run the water for 10 minutes and it may drop again.

Also give the vessel a good shake, this can decrease the tds for a few days

Is there any tap water running through your resin when you
flush your R.O.
I hear some systems do this and waste the resin.

not sure I understand the question John. im just running the tap straight to the RO (Merlin) comes out at 0018 then that goes through the di and comes out at 0014. I don't understand as it was 0001 the other day and has not been used since!!  ???

cheers

John, you don't flush a merlin. You run it for a good few minutes each time before running the ro water through the resin.

...................................................

What I'm a bit puzzled about is that with the Merlin I have, I've never had a tds that low. When the filters are new I always get about 30. At the moment it's 63. Just before the filters are completely knackered, it suddenly shoots up.

It I had a tds of 18 coming out the merlin, I'd use that and not bother with the resin.

Are you absolutely certain the merlin output is 18?

yeah  rosskesava, it was coming out at 0007 not so long back, but  I got the DI when it went upto 0018.
My tap tds is 180, if that helps and my pressure is 50 psi.

My merlin comes out at 18ppm with tds roughly 280 ppm I use a booster pump
Which brings it upto 70/80psi......

The merlin doesn't seem to be the problem so either you have got a bad batch of resin
or somehow its getting contaminated with tap or waste water.

Make sure that the top of the insert is seated right and that the pipe has not gone oval. Resin vessels are NOT bullet proof. We have had to replace a few over the years.

Also check you have it going the right way.

Hi Soapy.

That's an interesting point about the vessel.  I don't seem to be getting much life from my resin compared to what I used to and on inspection the top of the pipe on my vessel has gone an oval shape.

Are they knackered when this happens?  Do you know if you can replace just the riser or is it better just to replace the whole thing?

Sorry OP don't mean to hijack the thread  ;)

Cheers

Hi JamesAJF

I didn't get a new di to replace on, I just never had one before, when I first had my RO water was coming out at 0004 so I used it and never had a complaint. when it went up to 0018 I thought by getting a DI vessel would bring it right down, and it did to 0001, im happy with the water coming out at 0018 because its low enough for the di to polish it right down, but its now gone up to 0014, ????? and cheers soapy ill have a look at that!!

Am I right in thinking that you can replace the 3 filters in a marlin for a tenner or so?
If I was getting 18TDS after x weeks/months I'd stick to that.
Change the filters every month at that price...

I used to have ROMan (are they still about?!) which looks the same to me.
I had 300TDS in, single figures out for over a year on mine. You did flush that system though...
It was only £300odd. Made me 700odd litres over 24 hours. Was enough for me back then.

You can just replace the riser. Sometimes you can just cut the top off, depends how far the oval goes down.
