It took 2 hours + hour travelling to start no earlier than 11am to do this big house with two attached cottages. I have done them 4 times. The first payment (£400) in and out was next day. Next one took 6 weeks. 6 weeks again after that, then last time over 2 months. This time he wanted in & out at £280 but I'm not going back. It would stress me out waiting for payment. I forgot to add that the property is rented.
Am I doing the right thing?

Yep, £400 in three hours is terrible!
-
dump n take pleasure in never going back - even if they phone and beg or cry or plead down the blower, NEVER, i say NEVER go back
-
Or you say you'll do it if he pays you up front. (if he's not knocking you down on price that is)
-
No

You misread. Please adjust your glasses.
The first clean was £400 and took 9/10 hours as they were bad. Leaded glass in and out. WFP outside, but slow inside.
This time in and out it is an all day job as with travelling I can't do anything else.
TBH, if it was just outsides I'd take a chance and do them but last time took two reminders and I don't fancy waiting that long with just the chance that in the mean time he could move elsewhere. It is rented don't forget.

the slow paying is the clincher

...and the uncertainty about being paid at all. I would much rather keep it, but I don't think two months to pay such for a domestic property is acceptable. Not that amount.

I had a similar problem not that long ago.
It was a monthly job at £5 per clean.
Nearly ended up on anti-depressants because of the stress.
Thankfully they paid me in the end.

I took my £2.50 debt to court, sent in the bailiffs total bill paid with costs £978.50. Took a year. That was stressful.
edit to add: (just in case you believed me this story is not true ;D)

I can empathise. :-X

the fact that your thinking about and posting on here would suggest you already know the answer ;)
tell him new company policy for any accounts over £100 they need paying in advance due to being stung recently ... not that you would of course mr smith just the new way of doing things ............. you will soon find out the score
maybe better to do this than just dump ?? ............ only you know the answer
-
i would do what you have done.
its the payment time as well for me would be the deciding factor and knocking you down in price.
he is in a way dictating to you, the price, when he wants pay. £140.00 divided by 3 = £46.6 per month , go and canvass nearer to home and in a few weeks or months your turnover will be back to the present level

Oh yes that's better.
Dump

This is the reason I only charge like £2.50 a house I mean everyone got a change tin in the house ay they £2.50 is nothing so they aint bothered about paying it out and I wont get stressed about losing £2.50 .

You are right of course, but it isn't easy as it is the equivalent of dumping about 8 regular jobs and I hate doing it.

I dont get that and never have. The fact that he is posting on here suggests he doesn't know the answer.

I think you did the right thing.
These extended frequency larger houses are always a ball ache to clean. You'll almost recoup that by doing a new £10 job every week.
I lose interest in customers who are unreasonably late in paying.
-
give it to that other cleaner up your way he needs the work, and it be nice to see him wait for his money for a change. ;D :P :o

I have had a few recently not paying and the thing that I do not quite get they have paid well for years. Must be even the upmarket one`s are feeling the pinch.
