min wage for 16/17 year olds is £3.72 & for 18 year olds its £5.03

http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2013/apr/15/minimum-wage-rise

so your wage you had in mind is prob spot on, as i say i would be inclined to pay at least £25-£30 pw week above min wage from the start then see how it gos.

Depends what you want to do.
If you want someone long term to promote your business on a number of levels-doesn't matter how old they are-if they wanna work they'll work. If they wanna doss they'll doss-pay them enough to make it worth their while to promote you.
If you're looking for a pole monkey to bring in a few quid/catch up on your weakest work pay them the bare minimum.

When I first started working, I was 13. Weaker than the 18 year olds obviously but worked better cause I wanted it more. I kept working, weekend after weekend for the same guys while older lads came & went.
Not all 17 year olds sit around smoking weed in the park same as not all middle aged men work hard.

Pay them enough to get out of bed to start. Then as time goes on increase their pay according to the work they've done/effort they put in/money they make you.

Good reply Darren, tbh starting off we have paided them around 200 a week and then as soon as there upto speed
weve always paid them what there worth.

As darren said there not all lay abouts and if there decent pay them a little extra and you will find they look after your work ect.

At the end of the day it all depends on what there like and as a family business that has been going for nearly 50 years we've
always thought if you look after the employee's they will look after you and your business.
