I'm getting a new van (once I've found one) so I need to swap the tank from my old van, are the easy enough to swap over? It currently bolted in through the floor, I don't want to be drilling through anything I shouldn't.
I did as a supplier near me how much they would charge to do this and they wanted £650 :o seems a bit OTT to me

Its straightforward to do. Obviously watch out for fuel tank, exhaust etc... My advice would also be NOT to drill through your chassis/ rails/members. Just go through the plain floor.

What about using some spreaders too? I'd use spreaders; like large washers things.

why dont you ask your local garage to fit it lee if your not confident doing it yourself?im sure it would be a lot cheaper.if you ve got all the bits it wont take them long!

Yeah spreaders essential. I'd assumed he had them on his old set up .

Scroll down this link and you'll see four of them:

They 'spread' the forces over a larger area than just a nut and bolt.

I can understand a supplier charging that sort of figure as all though it's fairly simple job at the same time it takes a fair while to do especially if your doing the whole system. Some suppliers do window cleaning as well and when you think in terms of what they can earn window cleaning then they have to make a van fitting worth while. I was going to get a supplier to do mine and he was gonna charge a similar amount but the van came in early so I ended up doing it myself. Essentially your just drilling a few holes in the van floor and when armed with a tape measure, torch, friend and good pair of eyes you have to be stupid to drill in the wrong place.
Spreader plates are a pretty essential idea. Your probably looking at a weekend to transfer your system depending how involved it is, fixed reels,ro , water heaters ect, if it's very basic you could probably do it in a day.

Thanks Simon, I know who to call now ;D
There will be 2 of us doing it, so I'm hoping to get it done in a day.

personally I would go through rails underneath because they are plate under them.
Surely the van/car seats are fixed to the rails????
-
Grippamax crash tested tanks are only bolted to the floor, they did t want to interfere with the integrity of the structure of the vehicle.
-
The ionics system I had in my traffic was bolted through the floor with prob 6" plates underneath

What van are you thinking of going for Lee, and do you still have the drills powering your hose reels.
Simon.

Yeah still got the drill, it's still going strong :)
I'm looking at a transit or dispatch/scudo/expert. Whatever turns up first that's in my price range and ticks all the boxes.
-
Simon, what size spreadder plates did you use and where did you get them from?
-
My ranger was kitted out by Denni from water fed pole systems ltd. when I moved it across although I used new bolts and nuts I reused the spreader plates, just basically thick metal blocks as these went with the tank and were still in good nick. You would probably do well getting the metal and cutting and drilling it yourself as a lot of off the shelf stuff will be thin and not up to the job.
You want to use plates at the top and bottom really if you can.
I would steer well clear of the chasis. Denni who installed mine raved about putting it through the chassis and drilled into the chassis on the ranger but in actual fact you are compromising the integrity of the vehecal.

Arr ok thanks. Had a look under my van and to be honest fitter has t used very big prices for the plates, in some places it's only small angle iron. I will try and get a sheet of steel. Do you know what thickness the metal is on yours?

Mine is 5mm Lee. A proper DIY job. Just a bits of plate threaded
-
It's pretty difficult to measure but probably in the region of 6-8mm. Other thing you need to make sure it's rust proof ie stainless steel or something similar.
Simon.
-
mine are 4 inches square and 6ml thickness, my fitter welded the bolts to the plates also, £30 from a engineering company with bolts and extra nuts
