Len

Check vacume motor brushes for wear!
check seal on dump valve
Check water pump for any leaks and id alloy head replace with service kit
check for any leaks on recovery tank
check double shut off valves
check check valves to see if they shut off ! but dont bother if your machine is a Scorpion or a Jag as they dont work from brand new ! Lol

If your porty has an immersion or inline heater get some of this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kilrock-Products-Ltd-Kilrock-K-Descaler/dp/B0017RO0MY

It will safely descale heating elements and heat exchangers
