Anyone from Hull?
If so do you know Darron Mothersby.
I met him yesterday, great chap.
-
I only ask as I was impressed by his positive attitude.
Last August he fell from his ladder while cleaning windows and is now paralysed from the neck down.
-
How did you meet him?
-
He is in the Northern General in Sheffield. A friend of mine arranges visitation to people in hospital and away from their area and close friends.
He's 46 and a Hull City supporter but I can't help but like him, his sense of humour is first class.
-
I should be popping in to see him again on Friday. I promised him a 'Bakewell Pudding'
Any pearls of wisdom you think I should share?
-
man who gos to bed with itchy bum, wakes up with smelly finger...that the kind of thing your after sunshine?
hope this helps

I'm not sure a man paralyzed from the neck down is the best recipient of that particular 'pearl' but thanks for the effort.

You know, I dont think there's any pearls of wisdom to alleviate any of his concerns right now. It'd be easier for me to speak to someone who has just been diagnosed with cancer than speak to someone in this guys condition.
Fair play Stu, well done.

sorry. i saw the topic heading and saw the oppertunity for a silly joke & didnt read the thread. sorry that must of seemed really insensitive :-[

You're probably right, I guess I asked the question on here to highlight his situation.
What was most interesting to me was his 'visitor book', many said in it (as did I) that after visiting him HE was the one who made the visitor feel encouraged.
His wife and sis-in-law are fantastic with the support they give and I don't have praise enough for the nursing staff, they are in a league of their own.
He said that since his accident many window cleaners who know him have converted to the pole, as has his brother. He added that he would do anything he could to encorage others to do the same.
So when I bang on about H&S I now have Darron in mind. It gives me more reason to 'evangelise' about safety.

No problem, I'm sure there was no intention behind it.

What is the reason you do it so much, have you had a near miss or know someone who has? I think you started to use it as a marketing angle, hows that going?

I value life.
When you see your wife and son in and out of hospital having operations and tests galore you see how fragile life really is.
Darron's situation just confirms it.

My missus used to work in the spinal unit in Salisbury. The outlook for someone paralysed from the neck down isnt rosy. I think you'd have to be particular kind of individual to be able to pull things back together and make something of what remains of your existence. There are allsorts of aids and developments that help someone in that kind of situation but in all honesty its never going to be something we'd cherish or aspire to.
A 'friend' of mine, and I say that very loosely, jumped 25' off a bridge on to a dual-carriageway this time last year, he was paralysed form the waist down, in addition to two totally shattered feet. They were as minced as you could ever imagine. Anyway, a year later he is now 'walking', albeit with the use of one crutch. He has slowly slowly slowly managed to get himself back together, although one of his feet will never be of any use at all. But lookng back, this time last year we were visiting an invalid in a hospital bed who's only form of movement was by pulling himself up with his arms; whose legs were 'dead' and had no movement in them at all; he was having his back end evacuated by nurses and was looking to a future confined to a wheelchair.
Unfortunately his mind set doesnt appear to have changed a great deal since then, he'll probably do something equally stupid before long.
Saying that, miracles do happen, maybe this guy you are visiting will be one of them Stu. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Pass on our regards to him
There for the grace of god

How many more lives are going to have to be ruined, or ended before people get the message about ladders ?
-
I agree. Its really silly cleaning with ladders when there is water fed pole. When I started I used ladder and the cost was not less than a back pak and Harris pole, and a little skill.

I'm on friendly terms with a tetraplegic; I knew him prior to his accident too. He'd had too much to drink and he fell off his sofa - I kid you not - and his life radically changed.
He's doing this now:

I've met him a good few times since; he has very little movement in his arms and he even drinks out of a baby cup. Don't ask how he goes for a No 2; it's not nice.
Fair play for visiting that guy, Stu, I struggle with talking to Andy (the guy I know) on a one-to-one level. I wish I didn't, but I do.

I think it's probably easier as I didn't know him prior to his accident.
Just showing interest is more than many are up for doing.

I went to see Darron again today. Took him a Bakewell Pudding. He was in good form.

Funny, I was only talking about Stewart (Sunshine) on Friday with some of the guys on the QCF course in Lincoln (forum users) and mentioned that I had found Stewart to be a really nice guy attending Sheffield group. This post only goes to support my finding, much respect. Regards Andy
