Had some idiot yesterday thinking he owned the road i nearly ended up mounting the pavement so i had to do an emergency stop the idiot also stopped and got out and started throwing verbal at me so we both ended up exchanging heated words and then he looked at my van noticed i was a window cleaner and then "go get yourself a proper job",
This baffles me as to why some think window cleaning is`nt a "proper job"
What IS a "proper job" ??? ???
-
Anything except window cleaning is my understanding of it
-
A fire man is a very respected ( proper ) job !
They pic up £1500 a month in liverpool....

I thought they were on 28k Colin + loads of hidden incentives like tax free second incomes to keep them from striking...many firemen also do window cleaning and carpet cleaning in their tax break...
I could go on further but I won't...gets my back up a lot. By the way, I'm not picking on firemen as a whole but my pops was one and he's a prick.

Reply to the OP. "what's a proper job"...I dunno...maybe some sort of graduate that's 30K in debt before he even gets on the employment ladder...
-
I thought that was quite a humorous comment, you have to take things with a pinch of salt ;D
-
I had some guy a few weeks back, (this has nothing to do with window-cleaning btw) anchor up in front of me at a junction, I was on my push-bike at the time, so much so that I had to skid to avoid him. I started having a rant at him, he got so flustered he shouted back 'You should be on the bloody road'.
My response was 'I am' ;D

I'm a fireman I love my job,

I'm a fireman I love my job,
I covered for the firemen in Paisley during the last lot of strikes. I quite enjoyed sitting around watching DVDs all day to be honest.

Ye its good isn't it

Tax break ?
Where on earth did you get that from?
You can do a second job/business no matter what your main employment is , the reason a lot of fireman do it is because the shift system makes it easier .
I know a bus driver whos a prick, i know a window cleaner who is a prick......... so what?
anyone who shows willing to risk there life for a fellow human deserves a little respect i think , whether thats a fireman, a soldier or a copper etc .
will you still be moaning when they are cutting from your car and giving you life saving first aid ?
or rescuing your loved ones from a fire?
I never ceases to amaze me the bull you hear from people at times .....TAX BREAK ! REALLY!

Touchy touchy!, If you read my post again, you'll see that I was calling my father a prick...hahaha

what gets your back up then?
The "tax free second income" ?
complete myth
Gold plated pension ?
complete myth
my brigade lost two firefighters a couple of years ago , in a high rise block of flats searching for casualties.
Both had young children , and wives, and brothers and sisters , mums and dads .
28 k is cheap in my opinion .
compare that to train drivers on 45-50 k .
so what is it that gets your back up about firefighters?
-
Also, I personally know a few firemen who moonlight as window cleaners and they're not bad lads.
They won't answer the question of weather they earn more from thier full time job or their second "part-time" job ::)roll
Nearly half of the guys on their watch have second jobs, all self-employed which is why they're so resistant to change of shift patterns...
-
Thats not the main reason for resistance to change of shift patterns.
A change of shift patterns is to cut jobs and save money .
When it takes fifteen minutes for a fire engine to get you when your house is on fire and people are trapped inside then maybe people will understand the resistance to it .
Especially when everyone on that appliance is nearing 60 years of age.
-
Any loss of life is sad, and in every job there's a level of risk and danger :-\
What gets me is way that they were prepared to down tools and strike, when in reality they're on a good salary made excellent by shift patterns that can accomodate second jobs. The first mention of shift patten change and all hell breaks loose.
Train drivers salarys are crazy if you ask me, but they are paid by private companies.

Is that from just part time window cleaning?
-
haha im 20 years old and have a steady round, and one particular mate thinks he has the perfect job in engineering, he is a machinist wich could potentially earn around 28k a year. He likes to try taking the mick out of me for ''just a window cleaner'' however i work half his hours, earn more wage at the moment, will possibly earn more than him in the future, i have noone to answer to and retire when im about 50 hopefully. Now who is the joke on?

They were on crap money back then , less than a bus driver .
They also went to station and still responded to persons reported fires and persons trapped rtc,s.
The problem is everybody believes what they read in the paper when most of it is bull .

Train drivers are paid by private companies that are still subsidised by the government on the non profit making routes .
Win /win for the private company .

My nana asked me when I was getting a proper job she sadly past away before she could see how well I'm doing , shame really as I know she would of been proud of what I'm done & doing
-
A proper job is being a coal miner, isn't it, Griffin?
-
Thats what I always say to cold callers, who w want to sell me advertising. Grrrrr ;-)
-

Yes.
And being a lion tamer, too.
-
Been reading the daily mail to much me thinks , why the hell does it bother people so much if I work part time window cleaning, I declare it ,
-
I'm thinking about moonlighting delivering newspapers. But some might accuse me of not having a proper job as a window cleaner.

I've known a few firefighters who clean windows for extra money. One in particular stood out as we ended up helping each other out. He did it mainly because he was saving up for retirement as his pension pot was not adequate. It became unnecessary in the end as he managed to get one of the desk jobs anyway as he got older. He told me that he declared everything (bear in mind that he already used his tax free allowance in the fire service) because if he wasn't squeaky clean and got caught, the fire service would sack him. Apparently there's no room even for small transgressions.
The above is spot on ,The fire service can sack you for anything that "brings the service into disrepute"
Unfortunately there are very very few desk jobs now and they expect firefighters to go up ladders , use very heavy hydraulic tools , get up suddenly in the middle of the night and be instantly alert and as for entering a hot fire situation when you are nearing sixty ........ridiculous. You have to actually experience it to understand what it takes out of you .
As for the gold plated pension , we pay around double the contributions of most public sector workers and our pension is still not great .
40 years to get a full pension and if you cant make it to 60 the government want to take 5% of your pension for every year early , so if you get ill or injured for whatever reason and have to leave at 50 you have lost 50% of your pension ......even if you have paid in for thirty years.
That is the reason strikes are looming , not because of pay event though we had no pay rise for three years with inflation at 5% then a 1% rise last year ....... a rise that has been negated by the increase in pension contributions.
Im sure the papers will report differently though and slag us off rather than print the truth and the people that read the bull will believe it as gospel .

It's a second income bit that most other professions are not allowed though. It's like saying the pays crap but you can make it up grass cutting, building, window cleaning or whatever.
I think that the salary is an insult for what is expected with RTA,s and other emergencies, but then its not fair to turn up for a night shift where you may have to use heavy equipment after a days graft
Pensions are a lottery with no winners. Time served was the major contributing factor. The Daily Mirror pension was good untill Maxwell took all its funds and realistically who gets to work anywhere to build up length of service these days.
Whether its right or wrong, everything changes. I have a mate who is a fireman and its not a job I would like to do.
-
a proper job is one giving you the minimum wage. ;)
-
any proffession can have a second income , the only stipulation is that your not in direct competition to your employer or there is a conflict of interest.
The hard graft is usually done on days off rather than between night shifts and anyone can go into any job knackered , hungover or whatever .
The salary is an insult for what you have to be prepared to do but then its the same for soldiers, police etc ........ the draw to the job used to be a good pension but thats long gone for most public sector jobs.
-
lets face it we are one rung up the ladder than the Rag-and-bone man, people can do without there windows cleaned.
Any old iron Any old iron Any, any, any old iron You look neat. Talk about a treat :)
