So far so good ta!

Sign-writing is meant to turn up tomorrow, so that'll be something to get sorted over the weekend. Also getting the pole holders fitted over the weekend.

And then, that'll be that! All sorted.

Before buying any make or model of van you first of all need to identify what you need it for and what is required of it.

With regard to the Ford Custom, the interior cargo area is 1/2cm smaller than the current swb Transit van - 6cm as apposed to 6.5cm. Other competitor vans are around 7.5cm.

Payload is the most important. They have various payload variants-

250   -  700 kgs
270   -  895 kgs
290   -  1100 kgs
310   -  1300 kgs
330   -  1500 kgs.

In my opinion the smallest you could just get as a two man team with 650 liters is a 290 but you would be better off with a 310. (The diesel tank holds 80 litres which is 80 kgs full - another person weight wise.)

As the payload capabilities increase so does the price. You could easily start to let the price dictate which model to buy, which would be the wrong approach.

Matt, I like the idea of the big safe deposit box in your van for when you're collecting money.  ;)

More seriously though, do you leave your back doors open when you're working?

Depends where I am. Right now yes. Probably will most of the time. I usually park on driveways, can't really think of anywhere we do that is dodgy. You can lock the cab doors but leave the back unlocked if you need with the custom.

Thats a good point Spruce, my mate bought a T260 he got it for the twin sliding doors which are not to common on the Transits  only to realise the weight limitations. It cost approx £250 to have it uprated to a 3 toner, increasing the payload by some 400KG. This was primarily a paperwork excersise.

I did wonder about that but it looks mint and Matt's no fool, if it wouldn't work he'd have had smaller reels.

Hi Matt

The payload figures for the 290 L1 with the 2.2 tdci motor are 1083 and 1107. The L2 is just over 1000kgs. The difference in 'old money' is that we would call the L1 the SWB and the L2 the MWB. More weight in the body means a lower payload - which actually doesn't make sense. The bigger the van the more you would want to carry.

Which model transit are you after?the connect(smaller) or the larger(normal sized) one?

I have the new shape T350 LWB, It's got the 2.4 TD engine and is RWD.

I think it's much better thand the earlier T330 FWD model that I had for 5 years and many thinks went wrong with...

Didn't realise you we're talking about the L2, I have an L1.

The handles swivel, out the way, they're in the locked position in the pics, ready to be used. Not done any wrist knocking so far, if I do I'll be sure to be on a pornhub site when it occurs. ;@)

No, I was talking about the L1, so you have a higher payload than you thought you did.  ;D

When I spoke to Ford about the 290 L1 I was told the payload is 1014 Kg.

Have you got a link where it confirms what you are saying?

The trouble is that you do start to wonder what else the salesman said that also isn't correct.

If you’ve financed it, double check that it is what you signed for.

I've seen salesman quietly alter the finance period when he couldn't get the figures he had quoted and then deny everything months later when the customer's new vehicle purchase euphoria had worn off and he had looked at the deal a little more closely. It's too late then and just leaves a bad feeling that never goes away.
