Title: So what did you learn .....
Post by: Mike Halliday on April 28, 2013, 04:43:56 pm
..... From the TACCA day?

2 things  stuck in my mind, one was a quick talk with Jamie about how to find commercial contracts.

For  a long time I did some  strange   things to try and contact  big companies but I stopped doing Them as I came to the decision that 'professional' companies don't do gimmicky marketing?

But when Jamie started talking about cupcakes, posting shoes, sending holiday postcards it just clicked with me maybe those things I did weren't strange after all.

Secondly John Kelly and Richard from chemspec showed some forgers and talked about treating doctors surgeries and offices against communicable deseases and how there are companies making big money going into offices on a monthly basis and just fogging  them. An investment of £400 for a fogger and £20 of chemical and they are earning silly money.

Both of these were  gems of information which were just casually mentioned...... and that's what's great about days like this, if you keep your ears open you can hear business  changing information.

This is the one that I took away from the day. It was the only demo that I saw in between my sessions but that little gem can help our business and our customers.

Glad to be of help Mike. Persistance was the main point I was trying to get over. It may well be that they dont currently have a budget for a maintenance programme. However staying in touch until the next budget review, helping them submit a proposal for the service and finally them coming to you as they have funding is the key.

The shoe sending is one of Brian Philbins tricks, not mine. Remember I am 6'4" and Scottish. That means I have size 12 feet. Imagine the cost of sending those in the post!

I learnt not to travel 2.5 hours with Billy after he's had a night of drinking Guiness!

The Dr. Surgery one was good - I missed the shoe one though??

I love a good stat: did you know a wool carpet can hold upto 15% of the moisture in a room and that's before it's been cleaned.

I love to talk pricing with people not my own pricing but theirs and how they came to their figure and how they sold it to the customer to get the job a few little nuggets came around to change or alter my own slant on pricing.

Nick was damn good to you once Steve, correct me if I am wrong but didn't he pass quite a lot of work to you?
Also remember in the dim and distant past you were singing his praises and saying how much you were earning because of things he had taught you and the products you used to buy off him.

Get over yourself, leave it alone and grow up.

I learnt many things this weekend  dont follow a sat nav and be a smart ass and turn a 1 mile journey into a 6 mile journey and go round in a circle  4 times.

When the bell rings to get in a q for a hog roast  sprint as cc s seem to leg it to the food.

On a more serious not i found all aspects covered to be very usefull alloy marketin s talk on seo was very interesting.

Paul did a very good leather restoration demo which was easy to understand

I enjoyed seeing the nu life demo and the sytems they use.

Prob the best tips i picked up and wanted to learn about were cleaning rug fringes correctly

So much to see and learn could of easily taken 2 days

Then why stir crap where it wasn't needed. You are always the first to have a pop at Solutions.

Put your dummy back in.

Are you saying you never championed Solutions and Nick never gave you any (very well ) paid work?

Answer that truthfully and I will gladly crawl back in my hole. Talk crap and you'll get some back.

I'll answer your question truthfully had 1 job in Manchester which paid well,1 in Bradford which cost me money that's it. Yes I championed Nick until I saw through all the b/s.
I'm continuing to run a successful business without Solutions reverted back to chemspec products which are top notch products and work well

Thanks for your interest in my business

No interest in your business or you whatsoever.

Just bored of your constant anti Nick and anti Solutions sniping where there is no need.

If this is how you "bury the hatchet" with someone then you are a very sad man indeed.

Now crawl into YOUR hole, grow up and get over yourself. You really are boring, humourless and so predictable.

Carry on Steve, anyone with half a brain saw your posts many many years ago.

Would have wriitten to you on Facebook rather than a public forum but deleted you off there a long time ago as well.

Well I couldn't make it to the TACCA day, but one thing I've just learned is how funny it is when two grown men have a tiff on a cleaning forum.

Especially when one is based on an 80's film and the other looks to be based on an 80's band  ;D

At 50ft it seemed very powerful don't know what it would be like with longer lengths but the downside using longer lengths would be you need longer electric cables running to the property which could be a problem

I'm not having a tiff simply replying to questions asked. He wasn't even there but if he wants I could give him a list of names who were in the room having a pop at his mate I wasn't even in the room I was getting the organisers some drinks in the bar so missed it all ;D

What did I learn?
Chem Dry do inventory checks so they're not going to be happy with one person!
A lot of people have a problem with one supplier
For a bunch of individuals we can collectively group together when needed
All things said, we are a generous bunch of guys
Some could enter the All England talking championships

You say leave it then carry on!

So something happened when neither of us were there. One of us decided to use that as an excuse to have a pop where it wasn't needed and wasn't warranted. Why else ask for what must be a defamatory video to be published. Haven't you the guts to do it yourself or do you need a minion to do it for you? Are you hoping to go back to the days when you had and needed a little gang to back you up? Pathetic.

You decided to stir some crap even though you claim you have buried the hatchet.

And now you make an assumption me and Nick are mates, why don't you just come clean and admit what your post is really about? As you said, you have buried the hatchet with Nick so I can only assume you have an ulterior motive  ;).

You are a bully Steve, plain and simple.

I'll await your no doubt eloquent reply with baited breath  ::)roll

In between filming and taking photographs i did manage to have a good look at the ETM supplied by Woodbridge.
Its pretty compact and not a bad looking unit, im not convinced the gas fired heater is a great idea as all it will do is heat the water before it enters the pump so by the time it reaches the end of the line the water would be cool.
It was interesting watching the faces of TM owners when they put their hands over the end of the vac hose!

Liked watching Dave power washing the rugs outside, here's a guy who is totally confident in what he does...

I now have an interest in leather restoration...  ;)

Discovered how to clean your toilet without using bleach or vim  ;D

Is the burner too small Russ ?
would be good to have a storage tank plumbed to the van cooling system like bane .. and then the heater perhaps ... or just a big diesel heater ?
might get away with an electrical inline in some places .

Russ this type of heating system works well for window cleaners all be it at 100psi the guy said the machine doesn't dump hot water like t/ms and they had the demo one set to 60 degrees but I don't think they fired the heater up
Title: Re: So what did you learn .....
Post by: Mike Halliday on April 29, 2013, 07:10:57 am
It was a caravan water heater, I posted 6months ago a video of one I tried. It needs a bypass system of returning preheated water into a water box so when you let go  of the wand trigger it keeps fired up and returns the water into a holding tank.

If you could feed the heater with warm water you could achieve higher temps. 60degrees is not hot enough, it will cool to much by the time it gets to the wand.

Anyone thinking of buying the ETM would seriously need to think about how practical it would be given the variety of locations it is likely to be used in, purely from the perspective of feeding it power. A first or second floor apartment where you can only take the power from the apartment which could be 100 feet from the entrance? EOT's with no power in them. Places where you cannot park near to the building. At least with a comparable portable you can take the machine to the job.
Nice looking piece of kit though.

You have a good point Simon and this is one of the reasons i opted for a porty which can be van mounted or (most of the time) removed and taken to the location.
There is no doubt at all that this machine is powerful, the heating system to me looks totally inefficient and pointless, the easiest way to heat the water without having to run another cable to the van would be to use a little giant LPG in line heater  which should produce post-pump hot steaming water.

I know this isnt the thread to do a full review about the machine, but if i am honest i thought it looked a little cheap and flimsy for all that cash,   the recovery tank was also tiny so you are totally relying on the auto dump and auto de foam to work... the cost to replace 4 vacs would break your heart!

ETM's still need to be developed to compete with regular TM's... but they are getting there...

There is also an issue of dumping waste water in the street for which you can get a massive fine.
Another potential issue is running two power cords into the street - indeed running two power cords to any machine is illegally, or so I was told on Saturday.

I learned loads the other day, not only did I get some quality 1 on 1 rug cleaning with both Dave and Paul I watched Paul transform some battered old leather pieces within hours. Never been interested in Leather restoration but now I am.

I got some tips regarding improving turnover from Dave L which I have started to put into place today so straight away earning from the day.

To me though it's just more about seeing old and new faces and swapping tips/stories between us all.

Fantastic day but walking for hours to find a night club or open pub gone midnight just to return to the hotel room and drink decaffinated coffee and ovaltine needs addressing!!!!

i didn't really have time to watch the trainers but me and the wife had some good chats with attendee's, shaun ashmore and max/ollie campbell gave us some nice food for thought which we have adapted and been implementing today.

the thing is, its not that you don't think of the idea its just hearing it from someone who does it and is successful is motivation to try it yourself. if you see what i mean, hard to explain.

This style/type of day was started by Dave L and me for one reason only, the posts above say it all but basicaly the one thing every body should take away from a day like this is CONFIDENCE TO HAVE A GO.
To many guys go on courses and are still  s hit scarred to have ago incase they cock   something up. By watching guys doing it live in a easy to do style giving tips and tricks is the way that gives them the confidence and a bit of fire in their belly to try it and progress their business.  ;). Glad you all had a great weekend, i did. :)
