When hooking up a pressure washer to a fresh water tank, is it just a case of connecting an open ended hose to the normal connection on the pump, and allowing the pump to draw the water on demand?

What size is the pump, how many litres per minute?

I believe its 15l/min.

In an ideal world you could do with an on-board tank, acting as a reservoir and then drawing from that. Not all garden hose outlets will keep up with your requirements and may be way below it.
The tank can be a wheeley bin or tub of some description.

Sorry Ash I misread that.
15LPM will be fine with a standard connector and hose. If you go onto a 21LPM machine and above then both of mine have twin inlet and a 25mm bore hose.
You can also get a barbed inlet for the tank and just jubilee clip together

If you do this you'll be replacing your pump valves in no time. You'll be sucking air in and not to mention any crap.
From your pump inlet you'll need an inline filter, then suction hose, braided for non collapsing. Forget using garden hose.
This hose can either connect to the outlet on the tank or go up and over into the tank but will need a filter strainer to prevent sucking up particals which will block your inline filter.

Not sure yet Neil, I've just picked up a nice diesel Yanmar washer, need to do a few jobs for myself and the old man, then I'll make a decision with what to do.

i would put a fitting at the bottom of your water vessel so you are drawing water from the bottom of the water supply, this will give a positive pressure into the pump (as long as you water level stays higher than the pump)
as Lee(?) said you need an inline filter to stop crap getting into your pump, you can buy the ones in the pictures on Ebay or from Dual pumps
the bigger the supply hose & fitting the better at you don't want to restrict the flow of water into the pump by having too small a bore size

I've got the exact ones in the picture, all off ebay was the cheapest place, about £15/£20 each. Q washers he is called.

Is 3/4" wide enough bore for the hose?
Whats that in the final picture? I see the one above is an inline filter, but can't make out what the last one is?

The last one is also an inline filter but low pressure and not heat resistant. The brass ones I use post heater as they are heat resistant and can take high psi.
It is also easier to clean as you can unscrew it with your hand, the brass one requires you finding a wrench.

So if its on the inlet, low pressure and non heat resistant doesn't matter? So that is probably a better buy than the other one?

That last one in the pic should be fine on the low pressure side mate.

I apologise that my info was contrary to what was said later.
All of my pressure washers have an inline filter fitted and were bought with one. The two big machines have inline filters and also tank filters.
I never thought about the filter side of it.
