Have you got a safety mat to cover your safety mat so people don't trip over the safety mat?

The one in the picture is just rubber matting which isn't really heavy enough so I'm still looking.

By the time you have pulled the hose round the
Back of the house then come back to the van
To put safety mat over hose on the pavement
Someone could of already tripped over the hose!
Unless you put cones out the you would be covered!

So wasted of time IMO

Stuart, you need a third option, 'WOULD USE ONE BUT WITHOUT SO MANY CONES'

If that was me there would be one cone and I'd ensure the hose lay flat.

Was that the HSE or someone with H&S training?

In my other life which involves H&S I have noticed that even trained H&S people have a variety of views depending on how well they have been trained and their own personality and view of H&S.

I work as follows:  I place the hosereel on the house side of the footpath, connect the reel to the van outlet with a patch piece of hose, cover the patch piece with the mat, then take the end of the hose to the house.  The hose acroos the path is only exposed for a few seconds till I cover it with the mat - and I'm in attendance anyway so can ward off any evil pedestrians :-) .

Usually one cone and one mat.  Very occasionally more of either if the path is very wide for instance but that is rarely an issue.

That sounds like you have it sorted. I like the Idea of a patch piece to the hose reel.

You're quite right it has narrowed the pathway too much. I need a larger mat. The cones are holding down the edges to a degree.

It'll be on the Top Gear Christmas DVD with Jeremy Clarkson getting particularly animated.

I do that with a safety mat.........but I put it over a manhole with the cover removed  :D.

How many of us in all honesty park up and use the 100m to its full advantage?
I've got one where I can cover 3 streets and a cul de sac without moving the van 21 houses in total.
I'd need a big mat for that ;D

Tbh I reckon most on here do the same as me.
I could do all you suggest and keep moving the van and putting the mat out (mats are unsafe by the way) but I'd half my hourly rate.
Photos? When I'm out there its to clean windows not faff taking photos.
The hose is bright yellow about 8mm thick and I make sure its laid nice and flat.
The problem with window cleaning is its very easy, some might say boring, so we invent issues to keep the old grey matter ticking over ;D

Yep still part time, why?

Just chatting.

Didn't get the chance at the Impact workshop. There were a couple of Barnsley lads complaining about the prices they could charge. I remember you saying the same for your work in Killamarsh.

I use the fact that I'm ahead of the pack in my area as a selling point to customers and therefore drive up the prices.
Title: Re: Safety Mat

I think the key is to keep looking for fresh areas/customers and keep your prices going upward.

I have none of the work I started with in 1991.

Like I said evolve and reinvention are key.

Personally for me, working with the rear van door open is a big no-no.

I think this has the potential to do someone more damage than a trip from a hose, especially on windy days.

They are made for a specific purpose. i.e HGV's, not pedestrians! People are more likely to fall over that than your hose!!

I'm all for trying to make it safe but that's just overboard really, a person can just as easily trip over on the edge of that mat as they can some 6mm hose. Its really simple if you want to be totally safe and cover yourself on domestics then use a trolley or backpack.

Lifting and filling issues.
Lift it out empty, fill, use and repeat as required. If this is too much to lift empty then maybe window cleaning is not for you!! Maybe a nice job in a bubble wrap factory or summit!  ;)

Factory work is not for me. I doubt they would pay me £200 per day!

I have used backpacks in the past. What a massive faff.

I really don't see what is so troublesome about taking 15 seconds to put a mat over the hose.

im not WFP  but if I was id fear the hose- over- path issue-   pound to a pinch o muck somebody will trip  at sometime (some on purpose)  and the risk is high

old folk fall hard and fast,  ye gods what would you do then??

this reminds me , a few years back a lonely man customer followed me as I was returning to my van with the ladders on my shoulder and he hit his forehead on my ladder feet /although I was walking away from him at a fair pace ,he managed to nut the feet and then cried out "oh,oh my head blah blah" ,
now im sure he did it on purpose, wanted to start a claim ,not for the money, but for THE ATTENTION and form filling  . luckily for me,there was no mark on his forehead and the moment passed

I think what happens is that when we start with wfp we are aware of the dangers and open to 'best practice'. As time goes on we get a bit complacent as we work with the hose every day. Passers by aren't really expecting it, especially the old or partially sighted.

Not to my knowledge no. That said I don't wish to be the first.

I remember a chap being done for someone tripping over his black hose. Now we all use yellow.

It only takes one!
