Why d'you want to improve average visit duration.

All they need is your telephone number and a positive impression. They should get that from a website in seconds.

3 min 4s is plenty of time. The people you want to look at your website have probably gone through a process something like:

Oh, my windows are dirty
Think I'll Google window cleaners
Ah, here's one near me
Looks professional enough
Think I'll give him a phone.

Your bounce rate might improve if you center your window on the screen (especially noticeable on HD monitors) & make the colour scheme more attractive,... You've only a few seconds to grab a viewers attention so the home page needs to be spot on!

because bounce rate and time on site are ranking factors for google.

3mins is great - especially for a site about a local window cleaner.
56% bounce rate is not bad, either.

I did not know that.

I'd agree with that. Remember quite a bit of the traffic you get will be from nosey window cleaners from here having a look. (I went on and had a look, must have been there no longer than 90s)

A promo vid is a good way to increase visit duration by 30 - 60 seconds too.

Personally I avoid Google analytics on window cleaning websites & stick with 3rd party providers like statcounter.com - - as has been mentioned, visit duration for this kinda website isn't going to get much better than 3 mins anyway so why let google know these stats?!

Possibly/maybe/actually who knows; if you use Google as your analytical tool. I use statcounter but Im top of google in my town. So, not necessarily the case.

Dreamweaver is a great programme. Once you get used to it, like any software. Theres a month free trial with it or you can rent on a monthly basis. Buying it outright is steep unless you know someone who is a teacher or student.

IMO you'd be better off getting someone to design you a Wordpress site - once the bulk of the work is done then maintenance/small changes are simple.

I know what you mean, but when you've got a Wordpress site and start editing it yourself its easier to learn - rather than trying to do everything from scratch.

Video's are brilliant - I got mine off fiverr.com for £20 inc extras: http://youtu.be/zWMaILhE4bM

Dreamweaver is fantastic - but there is a steep learning curve,.. I'm using it for 7 years now & still discovering things. A 30 day trial isn't nearly enough!

Wordpress sites are good - but they're a pain in the butt to build from scratch. I'd recommend using a pro template (NOT a crappy free one!) to get you started as  it cuts out a HUGE amount of work & time as well as giving a really nice looking site. The ability to make your own changes is invaluable too IMO.

it's the case for every site, you don't need to be using google analytics for google to know what your bounce rate or time on site is, it knows this for every site.

Google finds ways of getting this info alright - but i'm not going to make it easy for them!

Oh really? And how does it do that if you don't use Google for your analytics?

From people using the Google toolbar, for one.

Anyone who gets to a site through Google would be subject to Google reading their cookies I would imagine?

Also there is a growing number of people who use Google browsers. Chrome and Android, I'd imagine Google would collect data from there?

I would recommend using Woopra alongside google analytics, its great for real time tracking of visitors and really makes it easy to follow visitors as they browse your site - http://www.woopra.com

I tend to use google analytics for a general view of visitors/traffic/content, then use woopra on a daily basis to see whats going on.

Would also recomment Joomla over wordpress any day.

Thats the one IMO that is the most influential.

also google can do "time on site" straight from it's search results. most surfers will click another search result link if the first site they go to isn't to there liking, so the time it takes for the next search result is an easy way to determine time on site. most serarch results have a tracking code in them.

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=14&cad=rja&ved=0CLcBEBYwDQ&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.somesite.co.uk%2F&ei=2_FNUaKlE7De7Aa7jIFQ&usg=AFQjCNFn9s7g3RPo0L4e5HjhgksqJWL3Hwd

bounce rate i'm guessing would need google chrome or toolbar or analytics to determine it or maybe even adsense ads might be enough. but there's a lot of people paid a lot of money at google to be one step ahead.

yeah i tried analytics on a few sites  (non windowcleaning ones) and it hit my ranking. i steer clear of it now.
