As long as the glow plugs have worked then yes.
-
Of course. 3rd gear, away you go.
-
Not good for a diesel engine...
-
not with a full tank of water ;D ;D ;D
-
yes you sure can my starter motor packed in , and had to get my garage to get it they just bumb started it no problem
-
bumb started it! That's not a service on the AA is it.
Sorry to pick up on a typo but it was funny
-
If it's your starter motor, the best thing you can do is locate it, and give it a good whack with a hammer.
Mine went on my Vauxhall Astravan, gave it a good whack, and it lasted for another six months before it finally died.

Not good for a diesel engine...
why
and to the OP yes you can bump it
-
It Can be problematic on any modern engine due to the filters on the exhaust .
Prob wont do any harm on the odd occassion though .

Bloody starter motors, just changed mine today! Started playing up 2 days ago and failed this morning. Absolute pig of a job(2 hours contorted under an Ldv) Done now and after a hot bath finally thawed out and rearing to go out tomorrow in the B..... snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heavy vans bump Easyier in reverse

I am not sure its the starter motor all the dash lights, light up but when I turn the Key and nothing happens, not even a tick.I will give it a whack tomorrow as suggested.I was driving back from the Window cleaning show and the motor just went dead then started again but when I reached home is would not start.
-
Diesel engines run at a highr compression than petrol engines...
Also, for a temporary you can arc starters into actionh if they are dying, simply get a bolt in a pait of pliers and touch both terminals on the starter. It's not ideal but if your really stuck it sometimes works...

if it died on you while driving it is not starter motor, more likely alternator/ fan belt or battery not taking a charge

agreed forgot about that,

Some vehicle have a fuseable link that blows if the starter motor draws too much current. Of those that do employ this method of current protection, the fuse may cut current completely, but others just use it on the main starter cable leaving power to other functions.
There will be a fuse protecting the solenoid, and there may even be a relay in that same circuit.
As has been stated - check that there is current from the battery at the main starter terminal and then check if there is current to the solenoid when turn the key to start.
As a temporary check you can run a test cable from the battery + a touch the solenoid terminal with the other end. If it kicks the starter motor into life, then the problem isn't the starter motor.

Thanks chap for the input and a special thanks to my mate Spruce always ready with his good knowledge of vehicles.
I have solved the problem it was a bad earth connection. I checked the battery and only registered 11.56 volt so thought put the charger on and then saw the state the earth lead was in so replaced it. Thanks, there is always someone on this forum to help and advise.Me ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D again

fair enough then ;D

I'm glad you got the problem sorted.
I've experienced a problem with a poor earth cable on a previous van. Most earth cables are secured to a stud on the gearbox. Steel bolts, an alloy threaded gearbox and heavy current don't mix and corrosion quickly starts.
I experienced all lights on the dash, but when I tried to start the engine, everything went dead.
