If you have the work and your pricing is correct and you want to grow your business then you have to employ. It's not a problem providing you get the right person/persons. I employ 6 and have very few problems. Each employee earns me about £6.50 ph NET.
When you employ you HAVE to get up in the morning and get the work done because they are relying on you for their income. You cant say I dont feel like it just take the day off. Look after them and generally they will look after you.
But dont employ family or friends!!

I took someone on recently and it takes a bit of getting used to. Financially it works well if your prices are strong. As has been said already, it makes you go out in the snow, rain etcetera cos if you don't then it won't work.

Yes it does make you more motivated. You also earn more. With the right person it's a good thing.

Yes mate. Makes motivation go through the roof, also you would need to add an extra third to your workload which motivates for the canvassing side of things. Those who say headache are the guys who couldnt organise it properly, theres nothing like pulling upto a row of jobs and just sitting back now and then while your lad just bashes it out. You will be able to get an extra £100-150 done a day if both working throughout too. Can only think of positives for your business with getting an extra pair of hands as long as you can afford to take someone on.

By far the best employees I have are friends and family. Of course I have lost friends (who hasn't) due to employing them and something going wrong. On the most part, as long as you have their respect, it is not a problem.
