Well guys it's been nice knowing you all.
Tomorrow I return to hospital for further surgery.
The surgeon will be opening my spine and attempting to "scrape" out a tumour through which all the nerves controlling my body from the waste down are passing/being squeezed to death.
Three possible outcomes are
I'm dead!
I'm paralysed from the waste down
THe surgeon does a fantastic job in which case I shall be back for more banter from you lot!
I know which of these three options I would prefer!!
Happy cleaning everybody and watch this space.........

Hope the operation was a sucess. Look forward to seeing you post soon.
-
Hope it went well Roger, but god its like waiting for news from the shuttle when it re-enters the atmosphere and radio contact is lost for seven minutes and you don't know what has happened.
I hope that you had a better experience than my father, who is 80 and was rushed to hospital today and spent 5 hours on a hospital trolley today waiting to be seen, I took my mother over to collect him to find he had not had any fluids since 7am this morning and it was 8pm when we got there >:(
Looking forward to seeing more posts soon Roger. :)

I had a text from Andrew who works with roger and the operation has gone well but he is in for quite a bit of rest.

Good stuff.

Good news, now just lay back, rest and enjoy the bed-baths. :o ;D

Evening guys!
Well here we are back home just over two weeks after the operation.
It seems to have gone well. The operation was just over 5 hours long and the consultant thinks he's got about 90% of the tumour out. He couldn't get it all as some of my nerves were growing through the middle of the tumour so I shall still have some permanent damage to me (like being able to stick a pin into parts or me and to not be able to feel a thing) but he hopes that he might have disturbed the blood-flow to it sufficiently that the rest of it shrivels up to nothing. Now I have a 9 inch scar running down my spine covering the two metal rods that have replaced the 3 vertabrae which have been permanently removed.
I was in intensive care for one night (more for observation than anything else). In total I spent 72 hours lying flat. I could roll onto my sides but that was still really difficult and eating on your side is a whole new experience. And being immobile for so long does horrible things to your gut.......!
So the surgery seems to have been a success but I have been left with what we think is "post operation neuropraxia". Basically this means all the nerves are bruised/knocked about/tingling/getting to "explore" the space they now have to move in following the removal of the tumour/expanding back to their normal size. (Lots of pins and needles and other such sensations!)
What this in effect means I am suffering from temporary paralysis in all my lower body. It is starting to wear off and I have been through having to use a zimmer and then crutches. To put it mildly walking is a challenge even more so stairs although I do have the benefit of a bannister rail.
I like to think I am somebody with a positive and "can-do" attitude and so I spend a lot of the day undertaking the approved exercises and stretches. I'm hoping I shall be back at work in about another 4 weeks. We shall see.
As you know I sold my business, knowing that once the sale had gone through I would be able to have this operation. Working for the new owner is good especially as he continues to pay me my weekly wage whilst I am off. It had been slightly quiet (as you would expect for the last half of February) just before the operation and the new owner was perhaps wondering if he had made the right investment. Of course, as soon as I was in hospital the business went ballistic and as it is busy enough to normally keep the two of us gainfully employed fully every day of the week you can imagine how hard and how long Andrew is having to work just to keep on top of things. All being well I shall be back in harness before the normal madness of a busy second half of the year starts.
Finally I would like to thank you all for your kind wishes and supportive messages it has been lovely to read them all.
In conclusion I can safely say therefore that there should be many more posts to follow. :o :o
Cheers.
Rog ;D

-
Great to hear everything is good so far.
Please take it easy- my wife had something similar but not so extensive.
She felt so good she got stuck in to normal life and redid the damage bigtime.
Had to have another op to sort it with a severe dressing down from the surgeon not to do it again.
Do your exercises but do NOT lift anything more than a pint pot.
-
Wot they said. ;D
-
Omg, my heart skipped a beat when I read the first message.
I'm so pleased you've come out the other side. I wish you a full recovery.
Best wishes Vicki (Mark's better half)

Managed a little walk today-some very nice comments from neighbours and shopkeepers who spotted me and were concerned for me. I think I look like an exaggerated version of John Wayne (drinking his milk) walking down the street after a long horse-back ride. ;D My wife thinks I look more like a penguin with a broken leg ;D ;D
Don't know when I shall be allowed to drive again.
Took me twice as long to walk to the shops (just over 100 yards) than pre operation. So although the paralysis is starting to wear off it takes a long time to do anything. Some of the shop keepers are very kind and said I could ring orders through and they would deliver them to us.
With my wife being disabled as well it is interesting observing myself loading a washing machine or cooking a meal for example, but we're getting there. As Churchill was quoted we "keep buggering on".
Luckily I can still type, so rather than watching day time tv, I am cracking on with a project I have wanted to do for a long time of making CD's (and transfering onto my iPod) many of my LPs and cassette tapes.
I could get addicted to not going out to cleaning carpets! :o
Cheers.

Good to know your on the mend. :)

Aye.... from me too.... however....
You seem to have found your typing fingers... does this mean grief from you all day long until you get back to work ?? :P :P
;D
-
I wish you all the best mate - I had two shoulder replacement operations last year that have lost me a years income. Big operations, but not as daunting as yours. I`m sure that you will come bouncing back though,
Cheers,Chris

Simon you need to keep up. Rog has sold the business and when he gets better he is working with the guy that bought it.
Did you think he had made a very fast recovery from drinking Powerburst. ;D
-
Ah ha, I thought his healing powers were a bit excessive. ;D
-
Hi Roger
I have been away and am glad you have come through relatively unscathed.
I look forwadr to buying you a beer next time you are in London.
Cheers
Doug
