Title: How do you handle hagglers?
Post by: wynne jones on March 02, 2013, 10:59:01 am
Slightly different to price shoppers who get a price and never hear from them again.

Recently I have had quite a few brazen hagglers trying to knock my quote down by huge percentage which I take as an insult.

The other day there was a programme on TV which is a series about knocking prices of things down. This week it was a couple trying to get a kitchen from Magnet for half price, which seemed strange as I thought everyone knew their kitchens are priced double their worth.

Anyone had this and how do you handle it?

me,
"that will be £120"

haggler
"£100 for cash"

me
"ooooo a haggler, i'm good at this erm! erm! £140"

haggler
£140? you said £120 a minute ago"

me
"oh go then £120 it is, ya twisted me arm, i'm no match for you am i?"

 ;D

seriously though (all though i do the above regularly ;D) if there not far off the mark and i like them then i will knock a few off, if i don't like them i stand my ground, if there taking the mickey with a big drop in price i tend to not like them so stand my ground.

'Which parts of the cleaning process would it be ok for me to miss out in order to do it for that price?'

had an "ind" who would not confirm my price when quoting saying he see how long i take and how clean carpet is. I said no we must confirm price. he said what you charge per hour. I said i dont i charge for the job and even if i did charge per hour i would have to include this half hour we are arguing about price! he reluctantly agreed my price and booking made. >:(

Love it  ;D

I find most cave in when I say no.  :D

They say Oh well you have to try dont you?

Like Derek I will sometimes come down a bit if I think long term they would be a good custy, but I always get them to do something for it which helps me and they feel they've earned it.

Did you see the same programme but the week before?

It had 3 London taxi drivers trying to get Hi Fi speakers reduced.

Now can you just imagine going up to their taxi and saying how much to Waterloo?

£15 they say.

I will give you £7.50.

I dont think they would take you,but they seemed quite happy to reduce other's margins.

If I was the Hifi guy I would ask for a tip.  ;D

The guy on the programme who is a millionaire says its good because its more business. This is totally spurious. If you gave everyone 50% off and you margin is 30% you will have lots of work, then you will run out of money.

Some sectors work on the principle that you will negotiate and if you dont well thats your look out. Double glazing, kitchens, insurance etc.

For me it depends how they haggle, most people havnt got a clue how to haggle.

(in a kind of disgusted voice) "errrgh is that your best price?" this just does nothing for me, and rightly or wrongly i very rarely budge.

"oh right.......I really want to use you but......." this or similar usually gets a positive response from me.

Then you have the pretty ladies who haggle you down without saying a word....im a sucker for this, gets me nearlly everytime

For really insistent hagglers I try to add something FOC (the downstairs loo?) rather than chop price, or ask about moving less furniture.

Yeah that's a good move. You come away with the dish for something that takes five minutes but has a lot f value to them.

i am in the Habit of providing a written quote before. Ive found that people tend not to haggle,  although if someone does ask for a better price it depends on the individual whether i would drop price

It's almost like a joke this carpet cleaning game. The poor retches on this forum scratch around doing leaflets, letters, big adverts. Carpet cleaners deserve to be wealthy with all the effort they put into getting work.

A mate of mine who does a bit of plumbing, doesn't advertise, won't work before 11am because he's a lazy git, is rude on the phone and has a couldn't care attitude about work. Yet the lazy hippos phone never stops ringing, the demand for him is immense!. He screams F off at his ringing mobile.

Talk about an injustice!!!!!

He might be a very good plumber though and playing hard to get makes him more in demand. It's quite a shrewd tactic.  ;D
